The only thing I'm peeved about the slim version is that it no longer has that nifty boot-up sequence with the top-down view of the rectangles. Its only a minor issue though.
Otherwise, the slim version is overall superior.
I got the fat one and have had since the first week they came out and it loads games perfect and stuff i've never had a problem with it.bigd575Yeah I've heard launch fatty tend to not have problems. But the fattys that came out around a year or later after the initial launch have the disc read error problem, etc.
My Fatt one broke the other day. I found that my fat one was better at reading scrached disks but it got jamed a lot. The way they built the slim you have internet, No jamming, and small. Get the slim. I got mine used about 3 years ago and its fine. I also knew a friend whos ps2 stopped reading disks.
You might want to look at an X-box I heard they wher only 60$ now.

Yeah I looked at XBoxes as well but I want a PS2 to play Final Fantasy X, XII, Kingdom Hearts, and Tales of the Abyss. I feel I missed out on some of the best RPG's in recent history. I have a Wii and hope for some good RPG's soon but until then, these classics would be great to play.
The fat one is said to haveless compatiblility issues with PS1 games....
I don't know if this list is still valid, but Sony put this up a very, long time ago: http://www.us.playstation.com/News/ConsumerAlerts/softwareTitles_75001.html
Really the only important games on that list is most likely, "Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete" But then again that list may only apply to the first versions of the slim models, in which case, it's probably not a problem anymore. Fight Night Round 2 is also on that list... I'm still using the fat, so I can't verify it myself...

Mine was around 2months after launch and it disc read errored. The one I got after that has worked well to this day though.
My last 2 PS2s were phat, and both had the DRE problem. I now have a slim and it seems to be doing fine, and so far has lasted longer then my second PS2.
Also the slim has the internet ports right in it, so you don't have to buy an adapter.
Well, when SONY started making the slim ps2 the stopped making the fat model. So if you buy a fat ps2 be aware that it is going to be an older console and therefore may give out on you. That said I bought a used fat ps2 back in 2004, i gave it to my cousins and it's still going now. That said, when I bought a fat ps2 a year ago I found that it wouldn't play some DVDs, I've never had that problem again since i got a slim.
Either way, your best bet is to get a slim. Ideally get a new one as it should last you as long as you want to keep it.
I have had both,
I went through 3 fat ones before getting a slim one, the fat one seemed to jam alot and say disc is unreadable and then from then on you couldn't play it. It also drew in alot of air as well as dust which seemed to kill itself. So i had to replace that one twice. But once i got the slim one i had no problems ive had it since it came out and its been fine.
I would go with slim...
