How will two-player co-op mode work in Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles?

Masachika Kawata: Two-player mode is basically a cooperative mode. Everyone gets on the network and helps each other out as a team. When you're playing in this mode it makes it livelier than if you play by yourself.

Are there plans for on-line functionality for this, or any up-coming, Resident Evil games?

MK: We'd definitely like to bring online elements into the game; both Umbrella Chronicles and to future titles. We don't have any [definite] plans, though we'd like to. [editor note: Capcom's PR team stressed that online is not a currently planned feature, merely a desire on the part of the developers].

How is Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles different from other shooters on the Wii?

MK: We've gone to a lot of trouble working on the visuals to make it look like a lot of the other games in the series. We think that this game will be as accepted by the public as RE4 was on the Wii. Other Wii shooters in the past have been bright, and not so scary. We've made this game darker and more horror-like, and we think that's one of the reasons that it will be successful.

How will the Wii Remote be used in the game? Will it take advantage of the Wii Zapper?

MK: We're using the motion control to reload and to shake off the enemies. These are the unique ways we're using the motion controls. The game was originally designed around the Wii Remote, not the Wii Zapper. However, using the Wii Zapper can enhance the gameplay by giving you a more palpable experience: it allows you to aim better and feel like you're shooting the enemies. In that respect it does give you a better gameplay experience. You can have just as much fun with the Wii Remote, though.

One thing Resident Evil is known for is having high replay value due to new modes, and collectible items. Is there anything along these lines in RE: UC?

MK: Yes, we've included a lot of unlockable items in the game. Also, because it's a shooting game you're going to want to play it again to increase your score. In the past, RE games have been made so you can play for a certain period time your first time through, and when you play through it again improve that. For this game we've done our best to make sure that it takes the same amount of time each time you play it, no matter how good you get.

Though the game follows familiar characters moving through familiar environments, what new areas will the game explore?

MK: This is basically a revisiting of the same places and the same people [of past RE games]. Because of the nature of an arcade-st-lye shooter, which is on rails, you won't be able to go and venture out to extra places. There are no new areas inside places you've seen before. But you can perhaps look forward to a new scenario that is something you haven't seen before. Not only will you get the general outline of the events in the Resident Evil series, but you'll find out what happened to Umbrella, and we'll take you a little bit further into the elements of the back story you many not of heard before. Perhaps there's a character you wanted to [more about] what happened [to him].

Will Wesker be one of these characters?

MK: Wesker is definitely one of these characters.
