Dragin Age Inquisition companion skill points?

How do companions gain their skill points? Do they gain them in relation to your skill points? Or must you use them all to make sure they all gain these? Thanks

yeah another murky aspect of this game. I auto leveled 1 and manually leveled the other, and it makes no difference.

Combat is always the same. You either win easy, or you need to level up more. There is no in between.

Oh right I see. So basically I can just not worry about them, they just get their points whenever the game gives it?
