Hey all,

One of the underlying technologies that enables secure transactions, such as signing into GameSpot, on the internet is called the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). An older version of this technology is SSL version 3.0, which despite being outdated and nearly 18 years old is still used to this day by older web browsers.

Google recently discovered a critical flaw in SSLv3 that can expose any browser to an attack that can yield passwords and cookies. This type of attack can also affect any website that supports SSLv3, and as a result, we've had to adopt measures that to protect GameSpot and our members.

Effective as of Wednesday, we (and other CBS Interactive sites) have disabled support for SSLv3. Generally speaking, this should not affect the vast majority of our members. Those who continue to use Windows XP, however, may no longer be able to sign into GameSpot, depending on their browser of choice and whether or not it has its own built-in SSL suite.

tl;dr, if you use Windows XP you should probably upgrade to a newer operating system (support for it officially ended on April 8), and you may no longer be able to sign in to GameSpot.
