I'm all for freedom of speech and whatnot but was it GameSpot's intention to remove the censoring on profanity? The reason I'm asking is because the mods recently stated they would be clamping down on antisocial behaviour and bullying here on the forums and the comment sections.

Allowing users to swear seems a bit contradictory.

Just thought I'd point that out.

Words considered as profane can be used non-offensively as well, and I see no problems with this. We'll still be moderating as indicated, taking context into account of course, so while you can freely use any word you like now that the censor has been removed, that doesn't mean you can use them offensively. It's a fine line (and as there's a varying human element, it's probably wise not to tread to close to it to avoid moderation), but it's not really contradictory in the end, as words themselves typically aren't inherently offensive, most curse words even have literal meanings that are completely innocent - though many such words are more often used for their slang meanings.

The stance on profanity isn't necessarily it's use, but rather the way that it's being used.
For example, a user can say "F#@K Yeah MGSV!!" and we're okay with it.

Would we rather you keep things classy? Sure but we're realistic.

Now if a user says for example, "F&$K You and your stupid opinion." We're less thrilled and likely to remove it.

Sure. I just hope people don't abuse it, that's all.

@Starshine_M2A2: If they do, that's where we have mods for. :P But I wouldn't want to see Gamespot return to the days of old, where you would get modded for using a single swear word. Which is so 20th century. ;)

An option to hide certain words within profile settings (as stars or something) would be useful. That way, we could keep swearing censored to ourselves without forcing it upon everyone else. But with that said, swearing to insult someone should remain moddable, censored or not.
