A great trip down memory lane

User Rating: 7.3 | Classic NES Series: Excitebike GBA
There were two things that got me into gaming when i was a mere child. My brothers and there Sega consoles and my friends NES. At the time he only had Excitebike, Duckhunt and a few more games but it made such a lasting impression on me. So all these years on how does playing the game feel?

Firstly the graphics are as great as ever. I always thought the original was one of the best looking NES games around thanks to its colourful courses and riders and bags of character. The game has tranferred well to the GBA keeping all of its original charm and fitting well onto the small screen and the courses are well designed and the bikers look great.

The audio does a good job of replicating the original and really thats all it needs to do. The sounds from the bikes bring back the memories and the 'music' is simple and suitably nostalgic.

Now the gameplay. The game plays as well as it originally did so long ago. The game is fast paced but simple. The aim is to get to the end of the track in a set time while avoiding obstacles and timing your landings well. There are four lanes to switch between and you also have the option of racing with other bikers. The gameplay relies heavily on nostalgia to keep you playing through the games small selection of courses so if you hate 8bit games i wouldn't recommend this, however, for those with fond memories this game plays great.

The value is a problem as there are only a few courses and the game relies on nostalgia far too much. There is a track builder which is a nice addition and you will pop back for a few quick races in the future just to help reminf yourself of times past.

Overall, this is a game for retro nuts and fans of the original. I personally enjoyed the games simple yet addictive formula and am glad that i bought it and it succedded in not destroying my memories.
