Another COD for the DS. Good, but could've been more.

User Rating: 6 | Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 - Defiance DS
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Defiance for the DS is a "younger sibling" shall we say, to the PC & Console game of the same name. Now I finished the campaign and tried a little of the multiplayer and that is what this review is going by. *Please note that there may be spoilers*

There are two control schemes: Stylus and Button control. Now I find the buttons to be more natural so that is what I used, so take that into account in this review. For the most part the controls were tight and responsive, but I will get into that later.

The campaign starts with a sudden invasion of the continental US by Russia, and the British and US were in a joint training session when the attack was announced. So you, switching between US and British soldiers battle your way through some of the front line battles. You go from Alaska to Baltimore to the Hoover Dam where Russians are attempting to seize important oil lines, airports and ship ports. The campaign ends with the announcement that the Russians are in NYC and bigger centres; that this is not a "quick end" war.

The guns of the game are nice to shoot for the most part; there are one or two that sound a little "poppy" instead of a nice full gun sound. The music sounds tense when it suits that moment, and ominous when nothing is happening so you are always on edge in a light sort of way. Besides guns, you get to be the gunner for a plane that drops bombs on enemy targets in an effort to help the allies below.
Its a nice change of pace as you have to time the drop carefully, or else you risk missing your target and losing the mission which can be quite frustrating at times. You also get to be the gunner in a helicopter, a tank, and you find the odd explosive weapon lying around and this is where problems show up.

I found that the hit detection is fairly poor when it comes to certain points in the game, like the aforementioned tank and gunner sequence. The Gunner sequence, I aimed at an enemy head and somehow missed when the ADS was right at enemy's face. I used an explosive weapon right at an enemy's feet (which would've killed him) but somehow showed the explosion going off 20 feet way beyond his head. The tank sequence: I lowered the gun RIGHT AT the enemy tank not 5 feet away, fired and it showed the smoke hitting a building way on the horizon! I had to drive the tank until I was barrel to barrel with the enemy tank before I could reduce it to a smoking piece of metal.

Speaking of the tank, trying to move the Abram Battle Tank was the absolute worst control scheme for a vehicle I've ever seen. It seemed to me that the controls would always go inverted (backwards meant forwards and vice versa) then suddenly it would switch to being normal again.

The multiplayer's hit detection seems to suffer as well; or maybe it was the Body Armour perk the guy perhaps had enabled; I don't know. Same story; I aimed RIGHT at his head, shot many, many times and nothing seemed to hurt him. As far as I know, there are not glitches like there are in Black Ops DS multiplayer, but do be wary.

Now in conclusion, the game is good, but maybe rent it first before deciding to buy it; it has some definite issues in a otherwise mostly solid entry to the series.
