Scalebound, the Xbox One and PC-exclusive action game from Platinum Games, has been canceled.

Microsoft announced the news in a statement shared with GameSpot this afternoon. "After careful deliberation, Microsoft Studios has come to the decision to end production for Scalebound," a Microsoft spokesperson said. "We’re working hard to deliver an amazing lineup of games to our fans this year, including Halo Wars 2, Crackdown 3, State of Decay 2, Sea of Thieves, and other great experiences."

Now Playing: GS News Update: Xbox One/PC Exclusive Scalebound Officially Canceled

This news comes after it was discovered that the game's Xbox.com page had been removed from the website; it now redirects to the site's homepage. A number of reports also emerged today that the game was potentially in trouble, including a tweet from Unseen64 and Did You Know Gaming's Liam Robertson.

Scalebound's name was absent from a recent Xbox Wire blog post that highlighted upcoming 2017 releases, and little has been heard from it since its E3 2016 showing. It was at one point slated for release in 2016, only for it to be delayed until 2017 alongside Crackdown 3 and Halo Wars 2. Last August, the delays were characterized by Microsoft as being motivated in part by a crowded holiday release slate.

This isn't the first time that development troubles with the project have been brought up, but as recently as November, Microsoft still seemed to believe it had a future. Early that month, Titan Comics announced a collaboration with Microsoft and Platinum to release a Scalebound comic and lore book in 2017. At the time, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said that more Scalebound news likely wouldn't emerge until 2017.

Development on Scalebound, an action-RPG featuring dragons and online co-op, was led by Bayonetta director Hideki Kamiya. There's no word yet on whether Platinum might continue development of the game separate from its partnership with Microsoft.
