Previously the project was scheduled to ship in the second half of 2016.
In a message to fans, co-authored by several key developers at Platinum Games, the studio claimed that the extended deadline was necessary in order to "deliver on our ambitious vision."
Platinum Games explained that the additional development time will "[help us] bring to life all the innovative features and thrilling gameplay experiences that we have planned."
The studio has also pledged to show more of the game later this year.
The notice continued: "Development on the game is going well and we're really happy with how it's coming together. Scalebound is one of the biggest games Platinum Games has ever created: an epic adventure filled with exploration and fantasy gameplay, inventive multiplayer, and action-packed battles on an unbelievable scale--all set in a beautiful and evolving world. It's the game our team has always dreamed of making."
Scalebound was first revealed at E3 2014, with Bayonetta game director Hideki Kamiya revealed as the project's lead.

In a recent interview with GameSpot, Kamiya said "for better or worse, this game is just filled with challenges for us."
He added: "From the experience in making original games, everything and anything is a challenge at this point."
Platinum Games is one of the world's most respected third-party games studios, responsible for titles such as Bayonetta, Vanquish, and The Wonderful 101.
In its message to fans, Platinum concluded: "Scalebound is a truly special project that's been several years in the making, and we are very proud and inspired by all the work our team has done so far."
