Retro's Wii U game to be revealed in 'not so distant future'

Nintendo supervisor Hiro Yamada says company hopes to reveal the studio's latest project soon.

by

Gamers interested in learning about the new Wii U game from Metroid developer Retro Studios may not have long to wait.

The Official Nintendo Magazine asked Nintendo supervisor Hiro Yamada if Retro is not making making Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, then what is the Austin, Texas developer up to?

"I wonder what kind of game it is? I hope to introduce it to you in the not so distant future."

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said in September that Retro's Wii U game will be "fantastic."

"Rest assured that Retro is working on a fantastic project," he said at the time. "We've got big games in development that are coming that are going to continue to drive the install base of the system."

Last week, Nintendo announced that it would not host a major presentation at E3 2013 in favor of smaller events to showcase new titles.

Retro Studios' most recent game was Donkey Kong Country Returns, which was released in November 2010 to a warm critical reception and sales of nearly 5 million units. The studio also collaborated with Nintendo EAD on 2011's Mario Kart 7, and was named by Miyamoto as a candidate to work on a future Legend of Zelda installment.

a new DKCR would be really great - but a 3d action game (whatever) might be a good way to show awesome 3d graphics in 1080p on the wiiu - all retro games looked really nice and i would like to see 1080p HD graphics made by retro - i am pretty sure that retro and even more nintendo will handle HD graphics different from most ps3/xbox games - lets see how new mario 3d game turns out - mario games used to be more simple - i would wonder if they now change the detail level to something compareable with good looking ps3/xbox games - but graphics in nintendo games are not the reason why to play them - but as the wii nearly had the ame graphics as gamecube games - its interesting how they will turn out with a better console.

A new Metroid or Donkey Kong would be cool, but honestly, I'm hoping this is a new IP. Retro is a great studio and I'd like to see what they can do when starting with a blank slate.

I think it's going to be Metroid x Star Fox.  There were rumors about it possibly happening back before last years E3 and if so, I'd be all for it.  Considering that Wiimote and Nunchuck are still a playable option of course.

The guys at Retro and Bluepoint are ultra talented. I'd love to see more Austin talent working on Nintendo properties. I also liked Team Ninja's  work on Metroid Other M. I'd love to see an HD sequel.

I think Retro could handle F-Zero, Star Fox, or Metroid well.

I want it to be a new Star Fox. We haven't had a new one in a long time and it would be a great fit to have the seeing the squad talking on the Wii U's controller and having the series in HD. I can do without most other Nintendo franchises for awhile (except for Link to the Past 2).

Retro makes some of the best games in the industry. Would be good if it's a Metroid game but "fantastic" might mean a brand new IP which it hopefully is.

Nintendo said it will be so good, they can't even talk about it. I feel like Nintendo is putting all its money on this new IP. It will probably be the reason why people will buy the console.

Retro is the best thing that has happened to Nintendo since Rare. Metroid Prime is my most favorite series in the history of everything. While I would be stoked to see yet another Prime-type game. I think it's about time they bring something new to the table.

Besides, I can play Prime over and over and never get tired of it.

I want some original IPs, that's the only thing that's gonna get me on board. I guess my fanboi days are over. I'm just tired of more Metroid, more Mario, more Zelda, more Donkey Kong and then 5 years of third party trash.

Sorry everyone.

I'll probably fall off my chair if they announce it's new Metroid. I can't put in words how badly I'm dreaming of a Metroid Prime on Wii U, and I don't care about the fact the trilogy officially ended.

Its sad when Nintendo has so little companies at its side and Retro Studios has to make games for others Nintendo IP´s, saving their arses. RETRO STUDIOS SHOULD BE ONLY FOR METROID SERIES POINT F NINTENDO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Better be a new Donkey Kong.

If Retro decides to make another FPS Metroid game that is on par with the Prime triology in quality, I'd buy a Wii U and then another one just for kicks.

Just about the only thing that would make me buy a WiiU is a game from this developer.  Come on Retro, show us what you got!

I want a Metroid but it doesn't have to be Prime. I would be happy with a new iteration in the Metroid time scale. I want a game with exploration and the open world of Prime with Samus in 3rd person.

Whatever they do I know it will be great. You simply don't f*** with Retro, Intelligent Systems Hal Lab, R&d 1 and 2 and whatever other ridiculous first party devs are under Nintendos umbrella tree. I think I maybe left one out or even mixed a couple up but bottom line: nintendo makes its bread and butter on these devs: who even needs 3rd party? That's why I got a ps3!

@6nips Retro Studios has a lot to prove to be on par with Rare's 90s titles.

@Redsyrup I personally thought Other M was horrible, it had bad controls, terrible voice acting and it was incredibly offensive (sexist).  It took one of the most respected figures in gaming and turned her into a 1990's barbie doll. I'd love to see Team Ninja all get pink slips or at least never get close to Metroid again. But I'm glad you liked it and want more.

@AvatarMan96 We NEED an HD F-Zero. GX was amazing and WAY ahead of it's time... a proper sequel is long over due.

@hall0559 You're complaining about more Donkey Kong when nothing has been done about that series since DKCR? That's a series they didn't even treat with respect all that much.

@Rovelius  imagine going back to 2d side scrolling like super metroid. that would be awesome

guahiatt

@Rovelius A new Metroid entry would be good. I have absolutly no doubt that it would be a great game. But wouldn't it be even better to see something new and refreshing coming from this studio? A new entry on a classic IP like Starfox for example? Or Eternal Darkness maybe? A lot of people are asking for a new F-Zero. A Metroid would be great, but less exciting I think...time will tell, looking forward to see what they have!

@Metronoid Why restrict a pool of talented developers to one series? Retro knows what they're doing, and so does Nintendo.

nintendoboy16
nintendoboy16

@fatherofsword Please no. Let that remain just a trilogy. I'd hate for a Halo 4 situation.

Let Retro do something else. Donkey Kong proved they needed it.

hall0559

@nintendoboy16 @hall0559

I think they need a new core set of franchises to re-energize the company. Everything else just feels milked to death. 2010 wasn't that long ago, you really need Donkey Kong Country Returns 2? Don't you want the creative minds hard at work to come up with ANYTHING NEW? I sure as shit do.

@guahiatt @Rovelius Eternal Darkness I believe is Silicon Knights, though I won't argue that there needs to be another game or even a re-release.  It's one of my favorite survival horror-esque games out there.

They've already announced 2 new Zelda games, neither of which Retro had a hand in.  Personally would love a new Star Fox because 64/3D are the only good ones to me.  Starfox would be amazing, especially if the touch screen acts as the "cockpit" controls.

Metroid, however, is still nice.  I miss the 2D games though.  I still play Fusion once in awhile.

@nintendoboy16 I wouldn't mind another Metroid entry, but I would LOVE to see something new from Retro Studios, their games are just great! Maybe a new Star Fox? We know they are not working in the new Zelda...but maybe the next one? One can only dream...

NoSoul81

@nintendoboy16 Halo 4 was made by a completely different developer than the one that made all the previous Halo games. Retro made Metroid Prime 1-3 and would be making 4.

I love the Metroid Prime games and would absolutely love Metroid Prime 4. But I'm an admitted Metroid fanboy.

nintendoboy16
nintendoboy16

@hall0559 I'd want them to do something new, sure, but after DK being treated with bad spinoffs pre-DKCR and post-Rare, I wouldn't mind a Returns sequel either.

I just don't want them to stick to nothing, but Metroid. Even Game Freak, who's infamous for milking a lot of Pokemon games, will spread out from that series (see: Drill Dozer and the recent HarmoKnight)

bazzaaa123
bazzaaa123

@nintendoboy16  how could the prime story even continue, the mp series was based on developed metroids with phazon which was destroyed at the end of mp3 (spoilers alert)

nintendoboy16
nintendoboy16

@NoSoul81 There's a fault when people want a development studio to do nothing but one thing. Don't Retro deserve more freedom than just Metroid?

I mean, look at Rare. They did a lot of Donkey Kong, sure, but they did enough to not be known as the "Donkey Kong Factory". See: Killer Instinct, Blast Corps, Banjo, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Conker's Bad Fur Day, and Star Fox Adventures. Everyone was ok with Rare spreading out from DK, but why aren't people willing to let Retro move on?

NoSoul81
NoSoul81

@nintendoboy16 The last Metroid was Other M which was not Prime and it wasn't very good. Regardless if that was Team Ninja's fault or not there's nothing wrong with making another Prime there hasn' t been one in 6 years.

nintendoboy16
nintendoboy16

@NoSoul81 I never said another Metroid was wrong (give it to another dev not Retro or Team Ninja). I just feel the Prime side of things should stay FINISHED after Prime 3. Not to mention, Retro needs a longer break from Metroid.

SNESNOSTALGIA2
SNESNOSTALGIA2

Exactly, in fact I remember before the original Metroid Prime came out so many critics and fans alike were upset that the series was shifting to first person and 3d - that this shift would ruin the 'Metroidvania' formula established by its predecessor - well they were right and everyone else was wrong! Bottom line, with all due respect: leave it to the pros! I trust retro with all my heart and whatever they do I know it will be great; I could care less if they add a 4 at the end! Please don't compare Halo to Metroid (not including Other M - not a Retro core game)

NoSoul81
NoSoul81

@nintendoboy16 @NoSoul81 Why would it not need to continue?

If you want something new that's your opinion  but there's absolutely no reason to think Retro couldn't pull off a great game in Metroid Prime 4 when 1, 2 and 3 were all great and Retro has never made a bad game.

It's ok to make countless Mario's and Zelda but can't have another Metroid? hrmm.
