Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition sells 8 million

Open-ended sandbox game reaches new sales milestone, driving $160 million in revenue.

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition has now sold over 8 million units, driving $160 million in revenue, developer 4J Studios has announced on Twitter.

This figure is up from 7 million units sold by the end of June.

The disc-based retail version of Minecraft has been the United Kingdom's best-selling game for three straight weeks. In the United States, it was the third-best selling game of June, behind only Animal Crossing: New Leaf and The Last of Us.

Minecraft creator Mojang will hold the third annual Minecon in Orlando, Florida, November 2-3. Tickets went on sale last week at $150 each and are currently sold out.

The next new Minecraft release will be a version of the open-ended sandbox game for the Xbox One.

When will we get Minecraft: PS3 Edition?

Don't get too excited. The reason it's sold so many units is that it's dirt cheap. People not knowing much about can afford to check it out with it's small price tag. If it was a full priced game then IMO it wouldn't have sold as many copies.

Wow, imagine how many it will sell if they jump to PS3. Amazing.

Yeah, I didn't 'get' this game either, until I bought it after being persuaded by a friend. It's amazing. Completely different to everything else out there.

Like others have said, it's for everyone too. Definitely worth a try before bashing it.

How much do you bet that Minecraft on Xbox One will be number one when it's out?

I wish I had created this game.  All you needed was that crappy Doom or Wolfenstein engine and created an editor with it.  Even the Quake engine is too advanced for it.  Honestly, I wouldn't spend even a minute playing this game.

Oh good, here's another "Minecraft has sold..." article. We haven't had one for a while now and I was getting worried.

I find the longevity of the sales of this game remarkable, yet curious. The xbox 360 version sells like gangbusters, yet the PC version is far and away the best way to play Minecraft. I would never play this game with anything but a mouse and keyboard.

This is nothing new when you have an imagination the potential of this game is endless you can actually make other games in this game i recently played a map where it was actually tranzit from black ops 2 for any who dont understand the amazingness of this game its probably because your used to being told how to play the game(go here shoot here go here take this put there ect ect) i personally didnt like it back on pc seemed like a stupid thing but then the demo came to xbox and me(Having an imagination) made my first house(a box with dirt for a floor) i finished it just before it got really dark i went in closed the door and started hearing how i can only describe as sick noises over soft music(only made the experience even more creepy) and thus i thought if this can scare me(20 at the time 260lbs) then its worth my time long story short for those who do not understand the point of this game open your heart and try the demo for those who couldnt open your mind and try again :-) not to mention the updates who else loves simply walking around and finding a crack in the earth or a trench or better yet digging under your house to put at a new floor and falling into a Mineshaft :-)

@wcwj26 Thats more than all PS3 exclusives even. It is also getting close to the halo series of outselling them, so that's huge.

@blast880 This game does have its good sides. just like Billlabowski said. Its cheap, simple and has updates that actually make it better. Another thing is it gives you the opportunity to express your imagination in any way you want. Not only do kids love it, this game is made for everyone! It always gives you a nice play to go to if you do not want to do competitive gaming :)

@blast880 How can you not understand it? :s It's Lego's on PC/360. People seem to still like playing Lego.

@blast880 A sandbox that gives you tools and says "use them" is not a common practice. You think 8 million units is a lot? PC side has 11 million units sold and in general sells 11,000 copies a day. It will probably top out at around 14-17 million. But the fact remains, people like this game because it's simple, cheap, good updates and it's just fun.

@Cl0ud My friends have a dedicated Minecraft server, so I guess that's convenient for me, no need for "couch co-op", that's what skype is for. I forget how much it cost when I bought it, but it was less than $25 if I remember correctly.

@Keivz_basic You're right, it's not equivalent, skype is better. You don't have to share a monitor on PC.
