Half-Life 3, Left 4 Dead 3, and Source 2 titles found on Valve project tracker - Report

Projects labeled after company's shooters and game engine turn up in internal documentation; other names include "SteamMMO" and "Steam Box".

Valve fan site Valvetime claims to have unearthed documentation that show Valve Software employees may be internally discussing projects like Half-Life 3, Left 4 Dead 3 and Source Engine 2.

Valve may be working on a new Half-Life and Left 4 Dead sequel.

The alleged screenshots of Valve's internal project-tracking software from an anonymous source showed a 42-employee mailing group for a project called "Half-Life 3". The screenshots also displayed a 68-person mailing group for a project titled "Left 4 Dead 3".

The project called "Source 2" had numerous groups devoted onto it like "Artists", "Builds" and "Proto-games". Other notable project titles include "Steam Box", "SteamMMO", "Return to Ravenholm", and "Piston Test" (a reference to Xi3's Piston console).

Readers should keep in mind that this leak is not an official confirmation from Valve Software. Readers can check out the full list of projects on the Pastebin link.

In this case, speculation is everyone's worse enemy. It gets released when it gets released.

Mark my words, the release of Half-Life 3 will sell the most copies of any video game.  Valve has designed this from the beginning.

Great vid.  Hoping for L4D 3, it's been too long - and btw Jonathan, I traveled through Sarawak (Bario, Patik, Gunung Mulu NP) in the mid 90s- amazing place, good people.

Is all this because of the cryptic Valve ad in PC Gamer magazine?  What a coincidence otherwise!

I'm guessing that Valve is privately owned.... and illustrates both the Pros and Cons of being a Privately Held Company.  The pros:  You can release it "When it's Ready!" and not have to worry about releasing something that needed a few more months of incubation.....you can also take more chances, as you aren't gambling with other peoples money, only your own investment.

Cons:  Lack of productivity..... when you have to worry about "Quarterlies", you must either have some stuff in development or at least some signs of progress every 4 months.... people bitch about "Greedy Companies only worrying about their Greedy Stock-Holders", but in the case of Valve... they'd have released many more games/products if they had to appease the "evil stockholders", which would most likely benefit all of us gamers.  Then again, maybe their quality would go down the toilet if they had a deadline to meet.

I'm not sure which way I go on this issue.... there have just been a LOT of people bashing capitalism lately and it's really driving me nuts.  (as people read this post on a computer that is affordable b/c of capitalism and is as advanced as it is b/c of capitalism...)

it almost feels like they are scared to release new games in the series, as if they knew they couldn't top previous episodes...

I remeber the first time playing halflife it blew my mind back then and still does today, the community was simply the best you can ask for, supporting it with endless awsome mods like sweet hallife which was almost valve quality. One of the aspects about halflife that I like was the fact it set itself different from others shooters by making putting obstacles in your way that you had to overcome in its vast universe. For hl3 I always thought valve would release episode 3 to continue the gordon freeman saga but, halflife 3 would be a prequel that had another character like shepard based somewhere in the time of the seven hour war but hey just an idea. So Half-life your amazingly spetacular world, well thought of enemies and gman would put you as one of the tops games in my book. It deserves a number 3 :D

These boys have got some catching up to do game engine-wise. If they release another game with physics puzzles, fps platforming, linear levels and constant load time stoppages similar to Half-Life 2 and its episodes, it will receive the same review treatment as Duke Nukem Forever did (as that was just a Half-Life 2 ripoff with bad jokes).

Meh. Wasn't a fan of the Half-Life series to begin with, so I'm not excited for this.

And the internet just jized it's pants, even when the smallest amount of info shows up for HL3 happynes starts overcoming everyone.

Anyway i sadly have to be pessimistic about this, i honestly think i won't experience Half Life 3 ever in my life.

Valve already explicitly said they will not make a new game engine after source. Valve doesn't really flip flop....

Any information regarding HL3 is great. Hope is not lost for Gordon Freeman. Really hope HL3 has a co-op campaign. If so..I call dibs on D.O.G. He would be a great tank. Imagine multiple grav- guns where players would have to work together towards an objective. Lifting things with proper balance and timing. Figuring out how to get through an area with teamwork. Oculus Rift compatible..my mind boggles. Gman is devious and one of the most mysterious characters in gaming so one would expect some really intricate "puzzles". An almost open world environment would be great (a total open world HL3 would be too much to ask). Refreshed multi player would be spectacular as well.

I just don't care, half life games were overrated anyway, i never understood why.

Its taking so long for the same reason Versus 13 did. There making it next gen. Probably  the same with Last Guardian

There not gonna leave the story unfinished. It will come. Be patient. :P

And remember they don't have big companies breathing down there necks making sure its released by a certain date. They can take as much time as they need to.  And I hope they do. It will make a better game in the end.

No wonder HL3 is taking so long. Apparently, staff at Valve do what the fuck they want.

Don't feel like doing any programming today? That's ok, go eat food, read a book or watch a movie or something. Don't feel like continuing with this project? That's fine. Go see if there's something else you feel like working on.

If my employers treated my colleagues and I like that, we would never get anything done either. It's a good job that Valve have that Steam money coming in every month. They'd go broke otherwise.

It took quite a while to make Portal 2 after the original Portal because they really wanted to do the original game justice, which is incredibly hard to do when the game is loved and praised by so many, but I think they did a really great job.

Although I'm sure Valve can do this, it would be so hard to make Half Life 3 because the expectations are so high, people want it to be even better than the previous Half Life games, it has to be groundbreaking and revolutionary.

But I have a feeling we might just see something next year, perhaps at E3, just like they did with Portal 2, which for many was a big surprise and I think they could benefit from the element of surprise quite a bit.

I'm gonna say this right now: The best way to handle Half-Life 3 is to simply finish that game and never speak of Half-Life ever again.

Oooooooooo.  A rumor, but a rumor with far more information than any in the past.

Crazy to think HL2 was released almost 10 years ago.  Time flies.
