Surprisingly really good and a faithful adaption to the 90s 3D platformer craze

User Rating: 9 | Yooka-Laylee XONE

Admittedly, I was turned off by this game due to the mixed reception, but I figured I'd try it out myself and see what I think. In all honesty, I was really surprised how funny and enjoyable this game is. I felt like I was a kid again playing banjo kazooie or donkey kong 64, it really does capture the spirit of these games very well with it's presentation. Sarcastic humor, colorful worlds and character designs, the way yooka and laylee control are also pretty spot on.

Does this game have flaws? Absolutely, the camera is kinda wonky, although I like the gibberish noises when characters talk, I can see how people could get annoyed by that, also the bouncing noise the flower transformation makes when it walks gets annoying pretty fast (I had to mute my TV). Some checkpoints are pretty annoying like in the crystal caves, and yet I was still having fun because the other elements of the game like the funny characters, the worlds and controls are done quite well.

I've seen some people compare this game to mighty No.9 as a failed kickstarter and that really isn't the case. This game actually has effort and love put into it, and in terms of capturing that 90s feel of collect a thon platformers, it really does nail it. Keep in mind though, this is not a triple A title, it's a smaller company with people who have the experience, and considering the budget and appropriate pricing, they did an excellent job. If you like 3D platformers from the N64 era, you'll love it, if you cannot stand those, this game won't change your mind, but is still good at what it does.
