Bad start for Danny. Stating inaccuracies as fact just to back up a feature's point is weak. Get it together.

@Gelugon_baat: It starts at 5:20 and is full of assumptions. It's painful and not consistent with what I've seen from Danny in the past. Hence, get it together. I know he's better than this.

@jblp: I have seen it and I agree with all of them. I don't think that hype being a factor in the formation of expectations among consumers is an "inaccuracy". The things which he said after 5:20 are elaborative examples of that statement.

Maybe you are taking your disagreement too far by calling out "inaccuracies" which you don't even explain.

@jblp: You have spoken as if I have already agreed with you. :\

I am waiting for the YouTube video for this to be up. I am going to watch that and I will get back to what you said. (I am not going to bother with the GameSpot Flash player; it's a piece of shit.)

Also, I wasn't asking for the time in that video. I was asking you to point out each and every "inaccuracy" that you noticed and describe why it is an inaccuracy.

Furthermore, if you are going to label it as an inaccuracy, you will have to be more technical in your statement. Otherwise, you are going to sound like you are exaggerating your disagreement.

@jblp: That's your response?

If I am crazy for all that, then I would say that you are crazier, since you seem to call things out as "inaccuracies" without explaining why.

I learned a long time ago to avoid the hype train. As soon as a game looks/sounds interesting to me, I avoid almost everything about it until it releases.

It still shocks me how often I see people getting too excited about a new game. It needs to release first before you can play it, so why get so excited now? Why buy it before you know it's quality? Cognitive dissonance is annoying and I rather not participate.

@PS2fweak: I agree that it is good to avoid the hype train, but I notice more and more people being on the opposite... I don't know what to call it... maybe the pessimism submarine? Basically, where folks know next to zilch about an upcoming game, but still feel it is their holy mission to whine about every frame of the trailer or screenshot. It makes me miss back when a lot of games (on the PC at least) had free demos, those were my real determining factors on getting a game (beyond cash of course), rather than online praise or rants.

Great episode, a very good message for gamers everywhere! Hype definitely makes money so things aren't really going to change, but it's on us personally to maintain realistic expectations and practice due diligence when it comes to buying games (double true for people who pre-order).

Cheers Danny,

It's great to give this issue an airing and I agree with the point. I guess the contradiction is that hype can generate excitement but also lead to a nasty fall of bad reviews and disappointed consumers (I can't help thinking of the hugely anticipated but wholly underwhelming Watchdogs!). As you point out, the late announcement of Fallout may well have been part of its success. Would we have been so delighted with the product had we been repeated shown Fallout hype promos for two years prior to release, as we had Watchdogs. (hm, good luck, The Division)

Cheers - excited for The Point and Lobby in 2016!

What really stinks is when you don't buy into the hype but every game site spends what seems like weeks focused on one title you aren't interested in. This happens to me regularly. It's like I get punished for having my own mind.

The worst is when publishers show a vertical slice of a game at e3 years before it's even close to being finished and make the game look way better than it will ever be, Watch Dogs for example.

I remember back in 2012 my friends and I were hyped for Watch Dogs because of this "gameplay" trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcMRkyoHKeA

Then the game was delayed and the graphics were downgraded. https://youtu.be/Ml3jjWssiCs?t=26s

By the time it finally came out in May 2014 I had completely lost interest and never bought it, my friends who bought it said it was okay, but it didn't live up to the hype.

@JulianMatheson: I knew of Watch Dogs, but didn't see much footage, like from E3. So I bought it and I liked it a lot. It was what I expected, and I thought it looked really good. People complained about how it looked, and I never understood what they expected. Some mods were made, and people were saying the mods made it look so much better, like what they saw at E3, but they didn't look any better to me. I still do not get what they wanted.

So I guess I am glad I didn't get caught up in the hype for that one.

@kenundrum7: Go back and watch the initial E3 trailer for Watch Dogs. That game looked incredible. All the steam coming out of vents on sidewalks and stuff looked so atmospheric. Also there was really cool dynamic wind physics. Like at one point in the trailer Aiden is casually walking down a street. Some litter blows out into the street from an alleyway and as Aiden crosses that alley his trenchcoat flutters from the same wind that was blowing the trash around. Where most games just have predefined animations to simulate windiness it looked like Watch Dogs was going to have real invisible gusts blowing through the city that moved things in a fluid realistic way. It went a long way to emphasizing Chicago's nickname as "the windy city". The real game has none of that.

@saturatedbutter: I did go back and look at some E3 trailers yesterday. I did see steam come out of the grates, but I didn't think they looked much better, maybe because the resolution would not scale up. At least not enough to think we were gyped. Except for one that did look better to me, but it was a conceptual mock up trailer, and not all gameplay footage. I never trust those.

Really poignant episode, coming out of 2015. Last year was the year prelease made and broke games. Of all the games I played in 2015, the one I went into knowing the least about was Tales from the Borderlands. It was my favourite game of the year. I think hype is useful; like most people I have limited time and resources, so I decide what to buy and play based on trailers, reviews, recommendations. Sometimes journalists really don't help. The article posted on gamespot today, comparing the Division to Destiny, is exactly that. Hype is great, being really excited for a game for ages, as I have been for the Division since E3 2013, getting the game on launch day and loving it feels special. People's mistake isn't in getting hyped for a game. Get excited about it, and play it. Then make sure you can think about it in two ways. Compare it to what you thought it would, or wanted it to, be. And then try and play it objectively. How does it stack up, as a game, ignoring everything you knew or thought before you played it yourself?

@alex_kelly: Yes the gaming journalists have to take some of the blame I think :). The most recent example that bugged me, No Man's Sky. I forget what event it was, I think it was only the second reveal of the game but the first time most people had heard of it. All we really knew from it was that you could fly from space to planet surface in real time, and it showed off the stylized graphics. The press immediately went nuts, saying it was the next big thing, it was amazing, and to me it felt waaay too early to be saying that.

I think a lot of people don't like to admit it but our attitudes can be hugely influenced by these gaming media personalities, especially when it's the ones we particularly like or identify with. Danny is actually a good example, he's very widely liked by the readers. I'm not saying he shouldn't be :), and I don't want to sound like some egotistical elite telling everyone else they're sheep and all that BS :), seriously I'm not doing that :). I just sometimes feel like people are too quick to completely and fully agree with all of his views, such as things put forth in episodes of The Point. I just chose him as one example because it was easy given where we are right now. It's a general issue that happens in, well everything, politics, social discussions, arts, science even, whatever.

The point I was trying to make was that it can contribute a lot to hype for games, and it can be more powerful than marketing because it's not driven by money, people trust it more, but that doesn't make it any less premature.

Hey Danny you sound like you are auditioning for a spot in The Lonely Island with that intro.

I already ignore the hype on games. Witcher 3 I watched one trailer and then refused to open a single article with Witcher 3 anywhere near it from that moment on.

Same with Fallout 4.

Destiny was the final straw for me. I bought into the hype for that game so much I was already sick of it when it released. Then it turned out to be utter trash.

It's just not worth getting so invested in something before it is even a reality.

@Dannystaples14: It's something that's hard to do for us in the press. I try and stay away from trailers and just watch gameplay if I can help myself. Marketing departments have a real problem showing a game for what it is in trailers. There's this old idea that showing the actual gameplay will weaken the game, when really audiences are intelligent enough to get an accurate sense of a game from gameplay. It's weird. That's why I loved that the Witcher released that 20 minute gameplay demo. A strong game with a strong identity. Same with MGSV and Fallout too.

Sometimes I think I actually enjoy the hype more than some games. That Dead Island trailer (you know the one) was far more compelling than anything I ever experienced in game. I think it is on us as consumers to display a little more in the way of critical thinking when experiencing hype. Sure your game look good Mr. Publisher and you make some convincing arguments, but I really want to see the evidence for myself before I lay down my hard earned cash.

I also think there is also a direct three-way correlation between the amount of hype a game receives, its budget, and the actual quality of the game itself. If a game sucks (publishers know if they suck or not) and it has a huge budget, expect it to be hyped to the tits. If a game sucks and it has a small budget, expect no hype. If a game is great and it has a huge budget, expect a moderate amounts of hype, as the publisher will rely on reviewers and the public to carry it across the finish line. If a game is great and has no budget, tit hype (relatively speaking) cause you want to maximize that great investment you made.

That my logic, now tear it apart internet.

@LtJef: Eh, that more-or-less makes sense to me. If a publisher is going ALL OUT with the marketing, website banners, TV ads, Youtube ads and sponsers, a trillion "previews" (not actually previews, just hype-interviews) the more likely the game is just a sham, all show and no substance. Unfortunately all that glamour and hype really works when it comes to sales :(

@pongley: Yea, Ubisoft lovers to show trailers of games with graphics several years ahead of their time... it makes a lot of gamer get excited, especially those of us on PC!

Then the game gets delayed several years, AND the graphics get downgraded, AND you see other games with graphics just as good, AND (the real killer) you realize they didn't learn anything new when it comes to actual game mechanics... oh, but first you see all the DLC plans, and tales of micro-transactrions... basically all that hype gets whittled away over the years.
