Tomb Raider Vs. Uncharted | Versus

It’s the battle of the Indiana Clones as we pit Tomb Raider against Uncharted. Fighting for Lara Croft is Tamoor Hussain and repping Nathan Drake is Oscar Dayus. Uncharted 4 and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy pushed the PlayStation-exclusive series to new heights, while Shadow of the Tomb Raider will look to do the same on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The two series have been rivals for years now, but the real question is: which is better? Watch and decide who you think argued their case better in our poll! Ne

Ever since Tomb Raider came out in 1996, Lara Croft has been one of the most recognisable icons in video games. Since then the franchise has spawned two separate film series and a number of spin-off games and reboots. Uncharted, meanwhile, started in 2007 and has since become one of Sony's biggest and most beloved exclusives.

Both series feature intrepid, wisecracking protagonists; both take us on wild journeys around the world; and both contain similar mixes of explosive action and inventive exploration. But which franchise is better?

We decided to sit down and have a lighthearted but passionate debate about which series we prefer. Fighting for Lara Croft and Tomb Raider is Tamoor Hussain, who longs for the days of dual-wielding pistols to return. Batting for Uncharted, meanwhile, is Oscar Dayus, who actually bases his own appearance on a young Nathan Drake.

Watch the video above to see how the debate turned out. The discussion begins with randomly selected topics, and the pair argue in support of their respective picks. Alongside the serious analysis of each side, there's also some friendly fun-making and jokes at each other's expense. Be sure to watch till the end to see the quick-fire round, which gets a little goofy.

Last week we put The Witcher III: Wild Hunt up against The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to decide which of the two is the best open-world game, and Dave Jewitt's magnificent Geralt-like beard helped him defeat Zelda fan Will Potter. Make sure to make your voice heard this week by voting for who you think won the debate on YouTube or by commenting down below. Check back next week for another episode of Versus; new episodes drop every Wednesday at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET / 2 PM BST / 11 PM AET on GameSpot.com and YouTube.

Uncharted has better characters (even though Drake ruined the series for me) and a better story. But for gameplay and fun factor, Tomb Raider wins by a mile. Uncharted is just basically an ambush simulator and a bunch of predictable falling platforms. At least TR is competent at stealth combat and gives players a choice of how to tactically take advantage of a situation, whereas Uncharted's guns are all very samey and your stealth option is only strangle.

I actually liked Tomb Raider reboot better than uncharted 4, but damn the Rise of the Tomb Raider was so bad.

really ??????TR is uncharted clone??? which part of it?? uncharted 4 did not have any thing just walking around in these empty massive environments shooting people .i think tr series 2013 and Rise are much better games with lots of exploration and good stealth and game play elements. Lara is much more attractive character for me. i am old school gamer .I have played all TR games since ps era.u1 to 4 they did not even make any change in game play structure.you will find something then a shooting happen and..... i did not feel any exploration in u4 not at all. just his brother talking about some unattractive Pirates that i do not care about their stories. really massive environments in u3/u4 without any thing to find anything to use some shooting and mediocre stealth. rise and TR 2013 were greater games they have the feel of old school adventure games like TR series. funny TR rise got 9 from games pot an u4 got 10! such fanboy website!! lol

uncharted series is much better in combat wise, while tomb raider most focus on surviving, tomb raider would be good, if it uses some elements from uncharted though.

The new Tomb Raiders are Uncharted clones with a few RPG elements thrown in. I enjoyed playing both of them but Uncharted is unforgettable. Uncharted 4 is one of the best games I've ever played.

One very significant point oscar should have brought to the table was that

The last two Tomb Raider games have combined for 18 million sales

The Uncharted franchise has surpassed 41.7M sales.

@trinifields: Uhmmm....that's not really saying anything. 2 TR games vs 4 Uncharted games...the numbers about the same should the TR reboot get two more titles under it's belt. Plus I can't tell you how many times I've seen that Nathan Drake Collection on sale for $7-$10. Not sure if it's included in that 41mil, but if each of those 3 games are counted as separate sales, those numbers look A LOT less impressive.

@Skrilla_XS: 5 Uncharted games if you count Lost Legacy (which still doesn't include the collection)

EDIT: 6 Uncharted games if you count the Vita game!

Gonna go with tomb raider here. Uncharted is a great game and I would always recommend it to people but I just flat out enjoy tomb raider a whole lot more. Plus Idk about everyone else but I do find Croft more interesting than Drake.

The polls aren’t very clear. Which is the best is a different question than who won the debate.

There should be separate questions. First which is the best, second who won the debate.

Uncharted 2 is the best of the bunch. That said, I preferred Tomb Raider to Uncharted 3, and preferred Rise of The Tomb Raider to Uncharted 4.

Old Tomb Raider > Uncharted > New Tomb Raider

When the first Uncharted came it felt like a hollywoodlized, actionized version of the actual original adventure/exploration game where combat consists like 5% of the experience. But at least it tried something new.

The way the new Tomb Raiders try to step on the shoes of that blockbuster is the really sad part. It's like taking photocopies of a photocopy

I own both games and despite being older than both people debating in the video, I have to give it to Oscar.

Uncharted is the better franchise.

Sure, Tomb Raider has survival/RPG elements now, but they are terribly implemented (Horizon: Zero Dawn does a better job). The animation is off, the voice acting is awful, the story is weak... I could go on.

And say what you like about "Nathan Drake killing indiscriminately", I don't recall him ever putting a shotgun to someone's head and pulling the trigger.

I own both games and both games have merits, but i think Uncharted is superior.

Tomb Raider's mechanics are weird, the acting is abysmal and the whole idea of finding a piece of metal and crafting it into a gun is just as believable as finding bullet cartridges on the floor.

Uncharted on the other hand, focuses on the action and the cutscenes are very well acted. The mechanics, although flawed, work well enough and the scenarios and story are way more fun than Tomb Raider's.

I played through the first Tomb Raider and half of temple of osyris and lost interest.

Uncharted, on the other hand, I played all 6 and thoroughly enjoyed them.

@Eddie619: Even though I'm not a big fan of "grrl power" games, I'll go with Tomb Raider. Although I wish the game was more challenging. It was just way too easy, even on the hardest difficulty. I can't recall ever playing a game that was so easy on the hardest difficulty.

Anyone else feel this way about the last Tomb Raider game?

@ronaldmcreagan: Agreed.

I'm mostly a "normal" difficulty kind of guy unless we're talking survival horror. But after finishing Rise the first time, I had a second playthrough on hard just for sh*ts and it honestly wasn't much harder.

I plan on playing the new tomb raider. Beat the first 2 rebooted versions. Also played and beat every uncharted even the vita version. To me uncharted is a much better game. It hasn’t supporting characters alone that could have uncharted games in their own besides chole. The game play is fast and fun with a great mix of puzzles. Tomb raider des hide more areas to explore. To me there are basic moves that should be unlocked for tomb raider. Uncharted you have your move set at the ready.

In the end uncharted is my favorite by far.

If we look at the franchises on the whole no game has given me thrills like the original 2 Tomb Raider games - even with the awful tank controls. The first time I saw that T-Rex! The new ones are solid games, if a little by the numbers, but I enjoy the exploration hubs and that's where the new games really shine.

Uncharted on the other hand is one of the greatest narrative driven games ever. I find the gun play (especially in the first) bit of a chore, but you press on because the narrative structure is so solid and characters are compelling.

Overall I love them both, I prefer Tomb Raider but if you like one then there's no reason why you wouldn't like the other. I'm happy they both exist, if they did a cross over game it would be AMAZING!

The original Tomb Raider, both 1 and 2, are unprecedented.

Uncharted 3's (didn't play 4) gameplay was serviceable, but the story was great.

The new Tomb Raider (2013) has equally serviceable gameplay, but the story and the plethora of quick time events were terrible. As a result, felt like a waste of time, and was not very enjoyable for me.

It's a tough call for me but I like Tomb Raider better because of the sense of progression, and exploration versus Uncharted essentially a point A-B monotonous adventure.

Don't get me wrong. I really like Uncharted games. But I was pretty Uncharted out when I completed Nathan collections back-to-back. When Uncharted 4 came around, I barely finished the game after several months... And when I was done, it just gave me the sense of relief because now I can just put it back on the shelf and get back to other games.

Tomb Raider on the other hands, in addition to doing what you do in Uncharted, the game emphasis on exploration and experiments with items and the environment. The progression system makes you feel her struggle as she starts out with nothing (murderous killing machine by the end). By the time I'm done with Rise of Tomb Raider, I immediately wanted to go back to explore what I missed.

@tonyleo01: Agreed 100%. I never had a PS3 so I grabbed the PS4 bundle with Nathan Drake Collection and kinda plowed through all 3 shortly before 4 came out. Great games, no question, but by the time I got to 4 I definitely had franchise fatigue as well. They're all pretty straightforward "playable action movies" at the end of the day, with no reason to really explore aside from the collectible treasures that no sane person would ever get all of :D

The stories are great but the gameplay just lacks depth.

@Mickeyminime: The first 3 Uncharted game were good, but yeah, the last one was garbage. Way too much climbing, forced stealth mechanics, and entire chapters with no action whatsoever. It took me roughly one month to finish Uncharted 4, simply because I lacked the motivation to play. The other Uncharted games were so much fun, that I'd finish them in one weekend. I'm glad the series is over.

Well that was unprofessional. I'd never act like that at my job, much less towards my boss, unless I was trying to get fired. He's lucky Tamoor didn't throw him out a window.

Even though he was an ass I'm still gonna go with Uncharted.

Lot of Uncharted fans in the comments.....if I had to pick just one, I'd go with Tomb Raider, for a few reasons.

Uncharted has fantastic writing and character development, but I agree with Tamoor in that the shooting never really felt comfortable to me, nor has any attempt at stealth in the entire series. Not surprising, as Uncharted has always behaved more as a "guns blazing genocide-o-rama" type of game from the beginning which isn't necessarily a bad thing but it grows tiring after a while. I much prefer the combat variety of Tomb Raider. Blast the f*k out of one round of enemies, then stealthily take out the next area without them ever knowing you were even there. Variety is the spice of death! :D

Uncharted also lacks any real upgrade system. Nate in the beginning and Nate at the end essentially play exactly the same, which is cool as far as "realism" goes, but at the end of the day it's still a game and playing it should be just as entertaining as watching the story unfold. This being said, I appreciate the crafting and leveling systems that Tomb Raider provides.

That's not to say the entire Uncharted series isn't absolutely amazing. I've played them all and they're awesome. I just prefer Tomb Raider overall.

TL:DR - Uncharted good. Tomb Raider good-er.

Uncharted, without a question. The biggest problem have with the Tomb Raider reboot is that it's trying to copy Uncharted in many ways but nonetheless feels inferior compared to its competitor. It's a shame because the older TR games (despite their infamous controls issues) played quite differently and that diversity could've made the modern games feel more distinct.

Besides that, I do think that both Uncharted 4 and Rise of the Tomb Raider were a step back from their predecessor(s). Uncharted 2 and TR: Anniversary are still the best IMO.
