Avatar 2 Script Is "Amazing" And Will Begin Filming This Fall, Star Says

The first of the four Avatar sequels will finally start shooting later this year, star Sigourney Weaver has revealed. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter (via IGN), Weaver said, "We're starting training, and we're starting--hmm, I probably can't say anything. We will be actually shooting it by the fall."

It's been a long time coming for Avatar 2, as the first movie came out in 2009. A Christmas 2018 release for the first sequel was rumored, though director James Cameron himself shot this down last month, saying the movie won't make it out then, instead coming in 2019 at the soonest.

Going back to Weaver, the actress assures fans that the movie will be worth the wait.

"I'm telling you, these scripts are so amazing, I'm not worried about [disappointing fans] at all," she said. "Am I worried about how we're going to bring them to life? Yes, because they’re so ambitious. They're so worth it. They're well worth waiting for. I'm not worried about that at all. We're trying to get it done as quickly as possible."

Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana are also returning for the sequel, though other casting details are unknown. We also don't know a lot about the story.

According to Worthington, Avatar 2 will emphasize the "family" aspect that Cameron has previously spoken about. "This is going to be Jake [Sully, Worthington's character] eight years later, and he's got a family now'" he said. "The world is bigger than the first one, but essentially, it's a movie about family.

As for why Avatar 2 is taking so long to arrive, Cameron said previously that his plan to make the second, third, fourth, and fifth installments at the same time is a big task.

"So we're not making Avatar 2," he said. "We're making Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5. It's an epic undertaking. It's not unlike building the Three Gorges dam. (Laughs) So I know where I'm going to be for the next eight years of my life."

Avatar is the highest-grossing movie in history, pulling in $2.78 billion worldwide.
