Feedbackula - GTA V Review Revulsion

9/10? So Gamespot is saying GTA V is shit? Did Rockstar not pay you enough!? 11/10 or GTFO...

On a side note I never understood the idea of a "professional game reviewer". Can you get a degree in that in any college or university? Or are you just a person that plays games, happens to be more articulate then most people in comment sections (myself included) and get paid to give our opinion. Most "professional game reviewers" I would assume have never actually worked on a game and have no real idea on what goes into it and why some choices and decisions are made. They just have early access to an end product and give their opinion on it before we, the consumer, get it. I have NEVER bought or not bought a game based on what a reviewer gives it. If GTA got a 2 out of 10 (again just based on someones opinion) I still would have bought it. I love the series. I love Rockstar games and preordered way before the review came out. Game reviewers to me are like news pundants - a lot of opinion that you can take or leave, very little true insight. Some times you hear things you like, some times you don't. Some one else's opinion shouldn't cause you such grief. Be happy. Peace, love and videogames.

I've decided that Johnny is the most consistent of victim of trolling on the internet.

Scoring based on number scale is totally fucked up. With each game more and more meaningless. This is why it should be abandoned. For me there should be 3 ratings:

1 .play it for Christ sake!

2. play the demo, rent the game, watch YT - in short: try before you buy it,

3. Leave this sh*t.

Unfortunately Metacritic generation won't drop it. :(

I've avoided saying anything for months since I know I'll get attacked by all of the fanatics of such a sexist, backwards series and I'm really not in the mood for it, but Carolyn was right to point out the sexist attitudes of Rockstar and the stale mentalities in the series towards women.
Five years in development, five years and in all that time not once did the developers and writers think: "You know, we've shown our hatred and disdain for women for years and our equally women hating fans have lapped up that hate so that they have an excuse to continue keeping the rape culture in real life alive. So why don't we do something new with the series, let's have the characters be female for a change instead of the ever sexist, generic scum we always do, let's avoid doing the usual rape jokes and hateful jokes towards women for once and actually portray a more grown up approach. Let's finally grow up and stop thinking that just because we hate women for whatever reason that we should keep enforcing that hatred to everyone else who really should be growing up as well"

But they didn't do that, instead they did the same old thing as always, the same stale ideas, the same boring characters, the same un-funny sexism and the same tired hatred of women for whatever their reason is. And the fanatics have lapped it up and demanded more.
That kind of thing is not helping the industry to grow up and move past it's attitudes towards females as a whole and when Carolyn pointed that out, so many attacked her for actually speaking up about something that really does need to stop being done in game after game.

I would have given the game a much lower score for being the same stale nonsense yet again, I'm disgusted that Rockstar have once again dismissed any chance of doing something new with the series in regards of the characters and how the female half of the species is portrayed, I'm ashamed to even be Scottish - Rockstar is a Scottish company - since such attitudes, while common enough with the dim wits, is frowned upon as our culture grows up.
Yet Rockstar are still run by men living in the past and determined to keep living in the past while catering to males who can't accept that it's time to stop acting like they are the by all, end all just because it's been enforced into men for centuries that they are 'superior' and 'better' because they have their genitals on the outside.

The score the backwards junk was given was too high, it didn't deserve a 10 since it did nothing new with the characters, mentality and the constant rape jokes that got old over a decade ago. It should have gotten a much lower score, yet it gets praised because it's Rockstar, a company of sexist, non-creative men who have caused more harm to an industry that seriously and desperately needs to grow up than it has helped it.

The attacks of Carolyn for her feelings and thoughts are not acceptable and those who think it's fine to attack someone for actually speaking up about something that is a real issue that needs addressed are the ones that Rockstar love for endorsing and condoning the ever constant mistreatment and abuse of women in the real world and the disgusting portrayal of women in video games.

Women are not angels, they are not perfect, they can be as bad as men. At times even more so, to portray them as little more than tiresome stereotypes for males to have an excuse to rape, beat around and mistreat is not funny, it's harmful.
Rockstar have made another pile of backwards junk and they don't deserve any praise for it.

Like it or not, but it's time for the industry to grow up and it's long past time for many male gamers to grow up and stop being so hateful.

I'm not a regular watcher of this show, but I was really impressed with how this episode handled this issue. I spent a soul-crushing hour or two on Monday just reading the comments on the GTA V review, and it made me genuinely question my own place in the video game community. I am glad to see you guys tackling this hate speech head-on, rather than trying to sweep it under the rug, and I appreciate the site's continued support of diverse perspectives and genuine cultural criticism.

This episode deserves a 10/10!! Johnny i'm your fan!

My problem with the score is that yeah 9/10 is an amazing score but there are so many other games that got 9's that are no where near the same quality and scale as this game and yes I understand reviews are only an opinion. Misogyny is a massive issue in the games industry as a whole especially in GTA but I found it strange that it was brought up in the review and not just a side article given that this is a problem in literally every game (with the exception of games like the last of us). The comments of the politics of the game were the only things I could tell that reduced the score, I mean the scale, quality and just raw amount of fun I have already had in GTA is astounding and far beyond any game I have ever played.

Perhaps in future the game should be reviewed by several people and given an average score?

Such truth in this episode, that's the sad thing... Who ever thought a NUMBER could generate such hate.. Anyway, regardless of the game getting a 9 a 10 or even a 5, I still enjoy it nonetheless.. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person who reads these reviews to get a second opinion before buying a game or just about the game I've played, rather than it being just a number to hate or love... Anyway, yeah.. Great, but sad, episode

Personal attacks are never justified. Agreeing/ disagreeing or expressing anything about a review or a reviewer should be kept on civil terms. Sadly people don't behave as they should. I hope GS takes measures not only to protect the staff but also the users, as of late any discussion turns into an insult competition.

Couldn't have said it better Johnny; the level of rage and abuse over a 9/10 score and Carolyn's own opinion has been absolutely outrageous but will it ever stop? Not likely as there exists no effective system to prevent comments like these from being sent live, be it Gamespot or indeed any other site on the internet. Ban them and they'll just do it all over again on another account.

I'm not encouraging you to mentioned more deceitful comments but don't give up on this show! If you mentioned more constructive and good mannered comments then maybe people would stop and take note in the future.

If its against the user agreement....start banning more people if they really personally threaten people. You can see feedbackula is a "platform" for these vile spewing morons...OR you can see it is a way to respond to them and say its not ok. I personally suggest the latter.

I like the over-criticism. Makes me know I'm not wasting 62 dollars on shit and boy do I hate shitty games. I can only imagine what it would be like review countless games you don't even care for. Ugh! It hurts just thinking about it...........

I mostly agree with the stuff here. Attacking a person for his/her opinion is low and besides the point. I also agree that we should be able to deal with political issues.

I disagree, however, with the analytical focus of Carolyn Petit. Her reviews/opinion pieces are increasingly stale since they hammer on about the same thing time and again. I havent, in fact, seen anything 'fresh' out of Gamespot since that Essay McShea did on Medal of Honor.

I'd love for "dealing with political issues" to not just be a euphemism for gender, and specifically, female issues but OTHER political issues like Corruption, Imperialism, Geopolitics and the like. Why must this be swept under the rug while we obsess over what this or that woman wears in a game?
