I've been searching around for some time now and come to the realisation that the PC promise of gaming utopia (higher performance at cheaper price) is not true. These videos always pull a fast one, scaling back the resolution or framerate of games to try and create pricing parity... which defeats the point and proves what I've always known: that the benefits of PC gaming are sometimes mutually exclusive. You can't have everything the PC utopia promises without sacrificing price. It's bullshit. And I don't say that as a fanboy. I say it as a platform agnostic who feels like he's been lied to.

If you are going to build a gaming PC you might as well raise your budget a bit and do a proper job of it.

There hardly seems a point to me unless I can get better performance across the the entire generation, price point and sound profile at the same or lower price than the console. And despite what people claim... that's simply not possible. There's always a give. The idea you can get the entire console experience on PC, but for less across an entire generation and taking into account sound profile (something every single pc builder out there seems to ignore) simply isn't true.

A more useful video would be a way to cheaply get a PC that has a small sound profile and price, but is primed for updating. That way the buy in price is small and the the long-term utility high. So a video that focuses on the big essentials (PSU/Motherboard/Case/Cooling) for maximum long-term return. Graphics cards and memory can be improved upon later on.

Would probably prefer dual channel memory in place of one stick. The motherboard looked to have 4 slots, so plenty of room for upgrades.
Good choice for the remaining components though.

Don't forget about the fact that games are much cheaper, for instance you can pre order watch dogs for less that 40 bucks on PC right now, it will be months before you can get that price on consoles. O and gaming on PC is just plain better :)

@holtrocks @Infinity_Gauntl Designed on a PC FOR consoles. I mean GTA V was designed on a PC wasn't it? Not even been released on the PC yet though.

Don't know where they got these prices. In my country the cost of would be like 50% more. Also the machine won't run games this good for the whole cycle.

@mars_marty They will run them better than consoles will for the rest of the cycle.

Sure, if you want to be on the cutting edge for the next 8 years you're going to have to upgrade, but that's an OPTION. Not a necessity, and it's an option that only exists on PC. With consoles you're stuck with 2011 technology for the next better part of a decade.

@Dannystaples14 @Kinthalis @mars_marty Yeah. Runs them like ass. Just like last gen. Jeebus, screen tearing, sub 720p., horrible textures, 15 to 30 FPS. What a mess.

In the meantime, a 2007 PC still runs games as good as a console, and you had the option of upgrading at some point and enjoy 1080p 60 FPs gaming, for YEARS, something that even these new consoles STILL struggle to do.

Replace the Win8 with SteamOS. Then you have the money for 8gb ram, mouse, kb and maybe a gamepad

@brande77 @ArchoNils2 yeah and I think that is a stupid argument. If it is all about getting the most bang for your bucks compared to console games. Even with Steam OS you have a wider selection of games than the PS4, xBox One and WiiU combined. This video is all about how a PC can outperform a console, wasting so much on a OS is just weird.

Does not mean I wouldn't do that. I just think for what they want to achieve with this video it was the wrong decission

@jesot @ArchoNils2 @brande77 Somebody is not doing his homework. There are in fact more than 500 games on Steam OS, more than PS4, xOne and WiiU combined

@LordCrash88 @ArchoNils2 @brande77 Using ebay as reference isn't fair as those systems will be used cheaper as well (not sure if there aready are some). Also especially with Win8 you can't be sure it is a legit version

If you're a student and your school is registered with Microsoft's DreamSpark program, you could get Windows for free and use that money to buy more RAM and KB/M.

Good build but it is going to be really hard to build this for this cheap unless you rely on Ebay luck and Mail in rebates. I got this build in cart for around $620 on Newegg with it being $580 with rebates. So if someone found a Windows license for $70 like you managed to this is doable, with rebates it would be slightly above $550 by only a few cents. This is all without tax however.

But if you managed to get that 7850 without rebates I sure would love to see where. XD

@shauneepeak if you're shopping for deals you can't just look in one place, as something that is full price on Newegg could be cheaper somewhere else

@Jkouw

Oh IK Newegg just tends to have the best price and I was simply trying to match the prices in the Video which I managed to. Only one I couldn't match was the 7850 which now that the full article is posted turns out was an open box special which is always a great deal if the site offers a money back guarantee and the Windows 7 which I knew I could probably match if I looked.

@brande77 You can get a "non-gaming" PC for under 500 easy..... Hell Chromebooks are only 200 bucks.
