Surprisingly good DS offering all around, ruined by arcade-level difficulty. Do not play alone.

In short, after having some time with it, I began to sorely miss the (superior) console versions' addition of a difficulty selection, because I found myself getting so fed up with the cheap AI that I soon reached for the Action Replay just to be able to finish any of the selectable ladders, much less unlock anything the game had to offer.

As a port to the small screen though, it's otherwise quite admirable. Controls are (mostly) tight, and it's quite handy that they do at least provide the moves for you on the unused screen for play (though, some distance reminder would be handy for those fatalities!). The smaller resolution makes you miss some of the finer details that the original game did have in the arcade, and again on the released home console ports (particularly the Saturn version).

Of all the non-remixed MK games, UMK3 stands out as the best IMO, and this version serves due respect to the original. Just too bad that it is too much like the original, including the punishingly cheap computer opponents that squash any chance of you ever getting to finish without cheating yourself.
