An excellent sequel to a game that was deemed the greatest of all time.

Let's be realistic here; how do you improve on a game that has received as many accolades and awards that Ocarina of Time has? Nintendo answered this question by introducing a new adventure that takes link to a much different world, yet keeping that familiar feeling that made Ocarina of Time so special. The end result was, in my opinion, one of the best and yet most overlooked Zelda title ever released.

The story begins on a rather lonely note, as link and his trusty horse, Epona, quietly travel through the deepest reaches of the lost woods in search of links friend from Ocarina of Time. It isn't long for this rather peaceful scene to take an unexpected turn as he is jumped by an imp wearing a rather peculiar mask. His horse and ocarina of are taken from him and he chases the imp as well as two fairies into a tree and falls into an alternate dimension. The imp is waiting for him on the other side and he uses a strange power that emanates from the mask to turn link into a deku scrub. Link, with the help of his new companion Tatl, venture through the dark underworld and find themselves in the realm a termina, a land that is destined to end in 3 days via the moon crashing into the earth. It's up to Link and Tatl to find a way to retrieve the Ocarina of Time and Retrieve the mask in order to save the doomed realm of Termina.

Once you play through the beginning of the game, you will soon realize that the game-play revolves around this three day cycle. In essence, time plays a huge factor in how you play the game, it can be sped up, slowed down, and reverted to the dawn of the first day via the ocarina of time. Also, each and every character has their own schedule (with the exception of shopkeepers in which they have store hours) and can be found in different places on different days. This gives the game a more organic feel, it makes the game feel more alive. It also gives the characters in the game a bit more depth where they were rather wooden in Ocarina of Time.

The core Zelda elements are present; there are four unique and challenging dungeons to explore, and all the items expected in a Zelda game are present with the addition of a few new ones. But what sets this apart from any other Zelda game is the dozens of collectible masks that Link will acquire throughout his quest. Most of the masks can be obtained by helping the people of Termina in various scenarios. However the deku mask, goron mask, and zora mask transform link completely into their respective forms, each with their own set of talents, weaknesses, and instruments (when ocarina is equipped).

The sound design is one of MM's strongest qualities. Koji Kondo composed a very unique and surreal soundtrack that gives this game a very otherworldly feel. It makes this game stand out from Oot with it's twisted and ethereal music. However as in Oot, the Ocarina plays a major role in it's various forms whether it be warping, changing the flow of time, or other specific purposes.

Majoras mask will always be one of my favorite games because it was everything i could of asked for in a sequel and introduced something completely new and fresh. And while not everyone appreciated the change that Nintendo implemented, i believe that they created the most emotional and satisfying Zelda game ever. Period. The game made link a much more dynamic character and gave him a completely new role in the Zelda series. It wasn't about saving the princess, it was about healing a broken land and ultimately saving it from destruction. This game will go down as one of the most underrated classics of all time.
