Although the game features an exceptional gameplay and graphics, the lack of Zelda feeling prevents the Perfect 10.

What is exactly The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask? It is certainly supposed to be the official Ocarina of Time sequel, a delicate responsability, since OoT's worldwide Perfect 10 is hard to be repeated. Creating a new OoT with new dungeons wouldn't be sufficient, and would turn the game into a pure rehash. New gameplay is needed, and MM's new features are its merit and its flaw.

Quite all OoT's elements are back, and that's a good thing. You'll enjoy a large variety of puzzles, some insane battles with dungeons bosses, Koji Kondo's great compositions, brilliant graphics... But since the beginning, something isn't right. Link lost Epona, his ocarina, and has to run after some demonic Skull Kid in order to take back his properties. He ends up entering some parallel world (Termina) and transformed into a Deku (!!) by the Skull Kid. Moreover, Termina's moon will fall within three days, and Link has to take back Epona, the ocarina, find a way to be turned back into his human form, save Termina and defeat that Skull Kid. And that's quite a heroic task.

A heroic task, indeed, but what about Zelda, Ganondorf, and the Triforce? Zelda appear just in Link's memory when he remembers the Song of Time, and there's no Ganon at all. And I won't say there's no Triforce only because it is engraved on Link's Ocarina of Time.

But that weird plot creates some new gameplay features which are really very interesting:

First of all, the Deku thing. Link will soon be transformed into his human form again, at the very beginning of the game, but thats transformation will leave a material trace: the Deku Mask, which Link can wear any time he wants to be transformed into Deku again to use his unique skills. And MM's plot will turn around maskes. There's 24 of them in Termina, and each one grant Link with new skills. And some of them totally transform Link's body (Deku Mask, Goron Mask, Zora Mask and the Fierce Deity's Mask). As they're not all indispensable to solve the entire game, they allow loads of sidequests in order to find them, apart from new dungeon puzzles that can only be solved with some maskes' skills.

The three days engine also offers some great gameplay: with the song of time, Link can travel back in time to the exact moment he entered Termina, when there were still three days until the moon falls. What's so genial about it is that each character (except link) has a pre determined routine, that a special item (the Bomber's Book) automatically notes down for you. Knowing those routines allow you to help the game characters in order to get rewards, and those sidequests are really brilliant and addicting, the different characters' routine fit together perfectly.

The game's visual and music is awesome, there's no doubt about it, but it's still different from OoT, since everything is disturbing... It is not only a dark atmosphere, it's really psychology disturbing. It is clear why: you're in a world ruled by a Skull Kid wearing a satanic mask (the Majora's Mask) and where the moon will soon obliterate everything. And the game sensoty aspect really pass that feeling to the player.

Thus, everything working together makes a unique game, but there's a "Zelda" in the title and I can't ignore it. And just because I'm controlling Link, I can't say this is undoubtfully a Zelda game. Of course, it is not the only game of the Zelda serie without Zelda, Ganon and the Triforce, but MM's plot alienate a bit the game from Zelda's universe, as if the elements were not in their right place. It may prevent the Perfect 10, but it is still a must-play game with an unique gameplay that you can't miss.
