Well, it FELT eternal enough, so mission accomplished...

User Rating: 4 | The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night PS2

After a really disappointing start to the Spyro reboot trilogy; I was hoping The Eternal Night would make the series feel less like an eternity to slog through. Turns out, it hardly fixed enough of the mistakes that made ANB a pain. Sure, they put in a bullet-time ability in; which can be fun at times. But it feels a bit forced because you HAVE to use it or else get gang-banged by a bunch of apes ‘til you’re dead. Spyro can’t block attacks, can’t take too many hits, and could get his shit kicked in even when he’s knocked down and trying to get back up. This creates tons of frustrating cheap-ass difficulty, and it doesn’t help that the controls are still just as sluggish.

Moving on, I guess the best thing about the game is the music. Sounds a bit heavy-handed, but at least it’s kinda immersive. The dialogue, voice acting, and story are all kinda dull. When it’s not overly self-important, Sparx, who’s voiced by Billy West, flops badly but doesn’t make you consider putting an ax through your TV like David Spade did in the last game. The graphics are bright, but sometimes too bright as particle effects can really screw up your vision and could even slow down the framerate. That was a problem before, and it's still one in this game.

The Eternal Night is heavily flawed, but it’s a slight improvement over the first TLOS game if that counts for anything.
