Best in series, but not what we all had in mind.

User Rating: 8.5 | Tekken 6 PS3
It seems difficult to criticise Tekken 6 for feeling... Lazy, Namco has done it's best to stand toe to toe with Capcom and Street Fighter 4 aka SF2.5. But it lacks the new feel SF4 has in abundance. It lacks excitement, pizazz and spunk. It feels like tekken on a PS2.5, not PS3. And yet, it's the best Tekken yet. The one-on-one fighting is just as bone-crunching, spine-snapping and easy to learn yet hard to master as it's always been. If it aint broke…

So what's wrong? As a super Tekken fanboy I wanna say nothing, but the truth is it's probably got something to do with the fact that this home console release is based on a two-year-old arcade game. That's right, it's taken two years for Tekken 6, originally released in Japanese arcades in November 2007, to land in your PS3. Even the greatest games would struggle to feel fresh under such circumstances.

It is also the fact everyones getting sick of the over used dial a combo root. I think it's charming Namco stuck to the originals, I really do, but it shows to much. Before you say "what about the new"? The Rage system... Ha. More like Pointless system, sorry Namco.

Then again let's us not forget the bound system. Every character has a number of moves that, when used during a mid-air combo, will rise abit, resetting the juggle potential. For a game based on air combos, this is huge, and has already sparked much heated debate among the Tekken community. The main gripe seems to be that it is overpowered, calls have already been made for a reduction in juggle damage. Technically it extends even further the number of attacks a player can land before the opponent has the chance to tech roll out of a landing.

Moving on. Character wise, all your faves are here. Infact one of the best selling points of this game is "it's the biggest roster in Tekken history". A good thing? Seeing as the balance is very good, oh yeah. They all have nice if not great animations and have there own flow, if just abit robotic.

In the console versions is the "Scenario Campaign". Remember Tekken 3's Tekken Force mode? You know, the rubbish Streets of Rage in 3D, nuff said. Unless you care for the story of Lars and co, go straight to Arena. Which is a mini arcade with the story cutscenes, basically like Tekken 5's arcade mode, renamed "arena".

Finally online for some fighting fans this is the most important, *cough*. Stand clear my friend, because online has seen better days. Namco has had a few updates on Tekken's online but the lag is really bad, not for serious gamers. Infact at times it's unplayable.

Onto content, let's just say in general it has more on 1 disc than some RPG's, I'm not kidding. Most of it is quite pointless costume jibber, but hey more from your £ eh.

So end result, it is good, great even. Just don't expect that next gen feel you wanted.
