Excellent adventure game, interesting puzzles, funny!

I've been a long time fan of the Monkey Island series of games, and I have been waiting for a long time for this installment.

The developers have improved on the clumsy control system present in Monkey Island 4. You can either use the keyboard as before, or hold down the left mouse button to display a wheel which you can use to direct Guybrush where you want. This said, I don't understand what was so bad about the classic point and click interface. You can't browse for objects while walking, and it can still be tricky to control, often sending me back out of a door I just entered. At times like this, I really wish the developers would stop trying to innovate, and use the tried and tested method of simply clicking where you want to walk.

Regarding the gameplay, I found it to be a mixed bag. Some of the puzzles were very rewarding. others less so, and I couldn't help but imagine that the designers were starting to get bored by the end of the series where the "Puzzles" seemed to just involve travelling repeatedly to the same places to pick up different objects lying on the ground. Also, related to this, I found they re-used the same locations too many times, and particularly the last 2 episodes in the story seemed to be very restictive in their environments, offering little variety.

One thing that has been implemented which I think is a good idea in adventure games is a hint system. Unfortunately it has been implemented very poorly. You can choose how often you hear hints, but you cannot choose WHEN, so I found myself getting hints when I didn't need them. Also the hint system does not seem to take note of what you have in your inventory, resulting at one point getting directed to travel somewhere and do something that I did not have the necessary objects from the area I was originally searching to complete! This resulted in me using an online guide to solve that particular problem, because I could not believe that the game would be so stupid to do that!

The game has been split into several chapters. I found this ruined that atmosphere slightly, and it's a pity the developers didn't have enough faith in their product to release it as a complete package.

I felt I needed to concentrate on the negatives in this review because they have been rather neglected, but overall I still think this is a very good game.
