An action-packed racer with a lot of personality.

User Rating: 7 | Table Top Racing: World Tour PS4

The racing genre is pretty diverse. On one end of the spectrum you have hardcore simulation games like Forza and on the other end classic arcade racers like Ridge Racer. Table Top Racing definitely falls under the latter. There is nothing realistic about this game; from the small scale environments to the weapons and power-ups. Not that there is anything wrong with that, it fact this is quite an enjoyable game. Between the catchy music and smooth handling its rather easy to jump into Table Top Racing World Tour and just have a good time.

For a racing game to be fun both the physics and handling of the cars is extremely important. Thankfully, controlling the cars in Table Top Racing is actually quite easy. The turning is really smooth and consistent across all the vehicles. There are three different tiers of vehicles which range in power and speed. The main difference with the faster cars is just that they will require you to slow down and brake more often going into the sharper turns. This game is really about finding good lines so you don't have to slow down too much as you try to keep some momentum through turns.

There is more to this game than just the driving. You have a handful of different power-ups you can pick up such as boosts, missiles, and bombs. There are several different modes some which rely on pure racing with no power-ups or time trails and hot laps that only offer boost pick-ups. Then you have events like elimination races where the car in last place is eliminated each lap along with 90 second drifting challenges. Within each track there will be a handful of hidden coins offering one-time credit boost used to upgrade and buy new cars. This will often require you to use missiles to clear a path which lead to various little shortcuts.

What I really think gives this game its personality is in its theme. Seeing as this is "Table Top" racing you play as small Hot Wheels like cars surrounded by objects that seem comparatively giant. One level will have you surrounded by books and boomboxes while another has you on a cruse ship with baguettes and wine bottles. Beyond the charming level design this game features an equally charming, if not quite wild, soundtrack. The upbeat electronic music fits the fast-paced, action-packed, racing quite well. The songs are all very catchy using pretty traditional beats and rhythm.

Although nothing about Table Top Racing is revolutionary this game is just simple fun. The controls are super tight and the power-ups feel great. The catchy, if not ridiculous, soundtrack will help keep you excited and ease the stress of the occasionally suicidal AI racers. There are tons of events to play each of which ranks you up to three stars. To get three stars can be challenging but the game never feels too difficult. If you really want to text your skills or just mess around with friends there is even an option for online multiplayer. For a small scale racer this game offers quite a large amount of both content and personality. This might just be worth checking into.
