User Rating: 9.2 | Super Mario World: Super Mario Bros. 4 SNES
It had originally started with Super Mario Bros, and now comes Super Mario World, a true heir to the original Mario game. Whether it be in 2D form or 3D form, Super Mario World is easily one of the best Mario games to hit any console. Even up to this day, it can be considered one of the best 2D platforming games ever, despite the huge selection of side-scrolling platformers to choose from. Unsurprisingly, the game also keeps all the original concepts of the previous Mario games, and adds even more concepts and gameplay mechanics to make it the perfect side-scroller. The gameplay is perfectly polished, and shows how good a side-scrolling platform really can be. In other words, this is one of the biggest games to ever hit the SNES.

While some people may argue the original Mario game is the best in the series, the following installments had only improved upon an already excellent video game. Miyamoto wanted to make sure his creations were as good as they could possibly be, and that his fans were not dissapointed by them. He also wanted to make sure his fans didn't feel like they were playing mere rehashes of the original Mario game. More than anything else, Super Mario World shows that Miyamoto still has alot of fresh ideas for his games. Super Mario World keeps all the great concepts of its predecessors and brings in many new concepts as well. New additions to the gameplay mechanics are plentiful, and only improve upon the gameplay. Some examples are the introduction of Yoshi, Mario's peaceful dinosaur buddy that he gets to ride, or new items, like the cape. It seems as if there are few things wrong with Super Mario World, and that the addition of the game marked the peak of perfection in the series. Never the less, there is always room for improvement, even when something seems as good as it can possibly be. Luckily for us, Super Mario World is as good as we were hoping it would be.

Super Mario World is a platformer, and can be unmatched by few games when it comes to platforming games. When it comes down to it, Super Mario World is just plain fun. You walk across a 2D world, defeating enemies and making death-defying leaps just to save your princess. But, saving the princess again? Haven't we seen this before? Oh, right, that's the exact same plot of the original Super Mario Bros. Despite the unoriginal story, the gameplay in Super Mario World is solid. You will constantly be encountered by classical and new enemies, and run across a dangerous landscape to get to the end of the level. You go through some pretty daring jumping sequences in Super Mario World, and they only get more dangerous as you progress through the game. However, at least it's easy to defeat most enemies you may encounter, as it usually only takes a jump on the head, or a turtle shell to the face to overcome them. But, while this is true for most enemies, it is not for all, as some will be able to take quite a few hits before being defeated. Another thing you may notice as you you progress through the game is the sudden spike in difficulty. Super Mario World starts out at a pretty easy diffficulty, but gradually and significantly get more difficult. None the less, the difficulty is perfectly balanced, and never gets too hard. All these well made game mechanics make for an excellent platformer that should not be missed.

Not only did Super Mario World revolutionize platforming, it delivered excellent graphics as well. These graphics were truly cutting edge when they came out 1991, and still look quite good for a 2D platforming game. Super Mario World had some pretty good looking creature models, and excellent animations. Everything looked colorful, and crystal clear. Actions like enemies throwing red-hot fireballs at you, or Mario soaring through the sky with his cape all looked well animated, and very marioesque. It seemed as if Super Mario World also had its own style of graphics. They looked very similar to a cartoon, while looking very well suited for a video game at the same time. While they weren't the best graphics ever to be seen on the SNES, Super Mario World's graphics were very good back in 1991.

Sure, the graphics and gameplay are very good, but you may ask, what about the sound? The SNES isn't known for having epic orchestral pieces, or any really good music for that matter. While it is not perfect, the music in Super Mario World is very good. There is a pretty big amount of sound effects, they all sound great, and fit the game's theme quite well. Unfortunately, not all of our favorite Mario game tunes are in this game. However, Super Mario World makes up for this with a large collection of catchy tunes to listen to. Sure, sound isn't Super Mario World's strongest point, but it sounds pretty good.

And so, an excellent sequel for a famous series was created. Don't listen to all those people out there who hate Super Mario World, it is most definitely a game to be played. It has everything you could possibly want. Solid gameplay, great graphics, lasting appeal, and catchy music make for a truly remarkable experience. Do it for us, do it for yourself. No matter what way you put it, you must play Super Mario World.
