Splatterhouse 2 wii review virtual console

User Rating: 5.5 | Splatterhouse Part 2 GEN
Splatterhouse 2 was a cult game when it was released in 1992: a Jason-esque character as the main hero, a digital spooky soundtrack and blood, lots of blood. But it could still maintain this cult status today?

I didn't had a Sega Genesis (or Mega Drive, as it was called in Brazil at the time), but I played it with friends and had some fond memories of the game. However, when I downloaded it on Virtual Console, the nostalgia factor was not enough to hide some of the game's problems.

First of all: Green blood? I'm not sure, but back in the 90' the blood used to be red. I'm not aware if it's some Nintendo policy, but the game loses in this kind of small details. But wait, there more! Splatterhouse 2 has all the 2d side-scrolling cliches from that era: elevator stages, annoying enemies jumping everywhere and basic storyline (girlfriend in danger, have you ever played a game with this theme?). But the worst problem is the main character lack of agility. Everything you do is in slow motion: punch, kick, jump...

But the game has some good points. The soundtrack is still cool by today's standards and the enemies design are creepy (in a good way). The game has an average difficulty (it's not a walk in the park, but it's not Ninja Gaiden) and cool bosses.

So, if you're a Splatterhouse fan, you don't need to read this review: go there and buy it. But, if you're just curious, there's tons of better games in Virtual Console.
