Plenty of gore and brutality to compliment a really fun game!

User Rating: 9 | Splatterhouse Part 2 GEN
During the early days of the 16-bit era, the bulk of video games were targeted primarily towards the younger audience. Splatterhouse 2, which was the sequel to the hit original on the Turbo Graphix 16, completely went against the status-quo though and introduced a ridiculously gory, violent, and surprisingly fun game that was targeted more towards and adult audience!

The story is pretty straight forward and combines your typical generic "hero saves damzel in distress" gimmick with the storyline from a classic 80's horror flick. As Rick, the game's protagonist, you are trapped in a horrific world where you must enter a house that is completely inhabited by monsters, demons, and supernatural enemies in an effort to save your girlfriend Jennifer. With the help of the "Terrormask" (the mask he is wearing) you are given the strength to complete your task and save Jennifer.

The gameplay is similar to that of the original, which is a simple 2D sidescrolling adventure, where you simply have to kill all the monsters that cross your path and advance to the next stage, facing numerous bosses as well. Along the way you can even pick up various weapons such as a 2X4, chainsaw, shotgun, etc.

Visually, this game was actually pretty impressive for a game of its time. THe characters and environments are well developed, with plenty of gory and grotesque detail to go along with it. As for the audio, the soundtrack is pretty creepy and adds a thrilling high tempo to compliment the horrific feel.

The game itself isn't overly challenging, as you will likely be able to beat it within a couple of hours of straight playing (as is the case with most adventure games of its era), but you will find the occassional period of challenge here and there as well.

Needless to say, this is one of those ridiculously violent classics that is just plain fun, and can probably even be considered one of the innovators of the entire survival horror genre. Definitely worth a try!
