ambitious but fails due to slow gameplay, some confusing quests and some hard missions

User Rating: 7 | SpellForce: The Order of Dawn PC
SpellForce is a pretty unique game that combining RTS and RPG. Essentially, it is a resource gathering game with player-controlled heroes that you can improve with weapons and battle experience. There are quests to earn experience too.
SpellForce is not a game that immediately reveals itself. It will require few hours of play before you feel compelled to play it out of your own desire. This will undoubtedly drive away a lot of players which is a shame because the game becomes much more enjoyable after the first few missions.
Campaign has a coherent storyline, with plenty of surprises along the way, and interesting characters with their own unique backgrounds. The handy tabs at the top of the screen make it easy to control groups of troops, which can be grouped by type with a simple click.
Some missions are extremely hard even on easy difficulty settings. The quest system is a bit confusing, with only oblique references to which land it is to be carried out in and occasional scripting problems meaning quests can't be completed.
One of the worst things about gameplay is Sloooooow pacing. Half of your time will be spent watching units move from one area to another. You couldn't change the game speed on setting.
Graphics are hardly better than average. There are many RTS games in market with better Graphics. The environments are well designed and offering A variety of opponents and monsters plus different types of houses, temples, ruins, and other architectural structures. Sound effects are OK.
Fortunately I already played SpellForce 2, which was great and improved almost every parts of game and modified most of issues. SpellForce 2 have better graphics(much better), faster gameplay(still slow but at least faster than SpellForce 1), better quest and leveling system and some other improvements.
Overall, SpellForce has very cool game concept but if you don't play this until now, I think you should skip this one and play SpellForce 2.
