Outstanding in its day

I am going to review based on memories of when I last played it.
The intro sequence sets the pace with what can only be described as the best FMV produced in its day. On one side you have Blood Angel Terminators and on the other are relentless Genesteelers & Chaos Marines. It took me nearly a month to complete the demo so I had to pick this up because I knew it would have lasting value. No game at the time made me feel real panic walking down a badly lit creeking corridor. You can hear noises from every area which make your hair stand up. Particularly the Aliens style motion tracker which omits beeps at regular intervals.

Its your task to work your way through a Space Hulk (large alien derelict ship). Along the way you gain experience and eventually start commanding a troop of terminators aswell as planting bombs, sealing doors, eliminating threats - all the usual spec ops stuff.

The graphics were great in their day although Im sure they are less impressive now. Up close with the enemy involves had to hand combat with a huge sigh of relief when you cut open a head with chainsaw or whatever your specialised weapon is. Blood splatters walls of dark corridors and the structures are generally gothic and impressive.

The sound was excellent too. Each Terminator has an old Greek / Roman name and speaks in proper old style english. There screams are hilarious but also let you know that a good warrior has died and the chances are your strategy needs re-adjusting to control the oncoming hordes. Atmospheric noises are superb and really help the clostrophobic feel of the game.

The controls are a little dodgy but you accept them because your in a heavy duty armour suit. Your team respond well to commands(supressing fire while retreating, hurry etc). Hand to hand combat is not as flukey as one may think, the more experienced the Terminator the better chance of survival!

This game is all about strategy and with 25 (I think) levels you'll need every bit of it. There's a real sense of accomplishment when you successfully finish a mission - albeit with heavy losses.

If you have a 3DO then you must buy this!!!!!! It was my first game for the 3DO and will always be my favorite. Then I'll grab a 6 pack of beer and fall around laughing at way of the warrior.
