It started the series... but luckily it improved for two episodes.

Some ideas that were in the game would be nice to be revisited in a weapon-based fighting game: weapon damage. However, in this game, once weapons are broken all the characters fight exactly the same (like a gimped Paul From Tekken).

Other than this feature this game when compared to its contemporaries, like the excellent Bushido Blade, the venerable Tekken 2, etc... this game utterly fails and feels like Tekken rip-off. Yeah, they (Namco) tired to apply a rudimentary sidestep mechanic, but it hardly works.

Super special attacks, a string of attacks that do lots of damage (to the enemy and to your own weapon), is a tool not to be used as it has no use whatsoever other than to destroy your own weapon and to see the terrible hand-to-hand mechanics in this game.

If you want weapon based combat in a fighting game, go with Soul Calibur 2 or Bushido Blade 1 or 2 (or even Battle Fantasia is better than this).
