Old school game collections that are this complete are both a rarity and a delight.

Sega has become known in recent days for their old school game collections. However, their past few collections were focused on their flagship character, Sonic the Hedgehog with a few other games thrown in as bonuses. This compilation is truly worthy of the term "Ultimate". It's got every conceivable classic from the Sega Genesis era from the Sonic games, to the Golden Axe series to RPGs like Shining Force and Phantasy Star. Sega also seemed to have difficulty getting the games to transfer properly in their past compilations. The visuals in Sonic Collection Plus in particular seemed a bit washed out. However, every vibrant color and beautifully drawn background translates wonderfully in SUGC. I was particularly impressed with how well they held up in high definition. The sound is also improved as compared to its predecessors. I'll pick on Sonic Collection + once again: it sounded just a little tinny at points. However, Sega does continue its streak of responsive and well translated controls. Even on a joystick you still get the wonderfully satisfying feel of twitch gameplay. The shining star of this anthology, though, is the sheer quantity of games. I mentioned several of them at the beginning of this review, but those were only a drop in the bucket. You get to play such great Sega Genesis games as Shinobi III, Kid Chameleon, Comix Zone, Columns and Vectorman. And all the games I've mentioned thus far are just the ones available at the outset. You can unlock a myriad of extras (usually in conjunction with achievements) including interviews with some of the developers of the games and extra games. Old school Sega fans will find so much in this collection, and those who are inexperienced with the old school should pick this up as an excellent primer. Sega finally put together an anthology that shows why they were so well loved back in their day and why they should continue to be revered by all generations of gamers.
