Sonic does what Sonic does best in Sonic Dash

As soon as the Endless Runner genre started with Temple Run, we knew it was inevitable. No other video game character could be any more perfect for this new app genre than everyone's favorite blue blur, Sonic the Hedgehog. Well, after tackling a Doodle Jump formula, we finally got what we wanted; Sonic Dash for the Iphone and Ipad. But the question remains; is this the endless runner we were hoping for? For the most part, yes.

In case you've never played a runner before, here's how it works. Sonic automatically runs at a consistent pace while you swipe your finger across the screen to dodge obstacles. Swipe up to jump, swipe down to role, and swipe left or right to strafe. There is no end goal, but the whole point is to see how long you can last as your points are constantly increase as you run. You can collect rings which will keep you alive if you hit enemies, like any other Sonic game, but they can also be used for currency should you not lose them. That, or they can fill a boost meter which will help you breeze through the level at a breakneck speed for a short time. Hitting an enemy with no rings, falling off the level or hitting a wall will instantly end your run, unless you have another life of course.

And, that's it. It's a simple game to say the least, but that doesn't make it any less fun. Like other runners, it's a great way to kill time no matter where you are; waiting for your break to end or just hanging out on the sofa for the evening.

This game truly shines in its very responsive controls, what are debatably some of the best in the whole genre. It's not very often that I would die because Sonic didn't respond to my command and replacing Temple Run's forced tilt system with swiping your finger was a much appreciated idea.

The production value in this game is astounding too. The draw distance has no issues whatsoever, you can even see what's up ahead when you turn corners sometimes, giving you a little bit of a heads up here and there. The world of Seaside Hill has been beautifully translated onto the smart phone and tablet, and it almost feels exactly the same as it does in Generations.

However, as fun as the game is, it isn't without its share of faults. First of all, the game could have used a little more variety in its levels. You'll only encounter two locations to visit; Seaside Hill and Ocean Palace. Seeing the same two locations can get a little tiring after a little while of playing. Hopefully we can see more in a future update.

Another problem is pretty much the same problem I have with eery app game and Sonic Dash is no exception; in app purchases. Most of them aren't needed except for maybe the extra lives if you truly care about the high score. You can buy other characters too like Tails, Knuckles and Amy but I hope you're willing to pay $15 if you really want them right away. Otherwise, luckily there are daily challenges and missions that can help build up your red star rings (which is what you buy most things with).

Although it's not the most impressive endless runner on the app store, Sonic Dash is an enjoyable time waster. Perhaps in future updates we can see more levels and characters added so the game can truly reach its full potential. Other than annoying in-app purchases, this free app is perfect for any fan of Sonic the Hedgehog who just wants to do nothing but run.
