Needs to catch up to the likes of Ratchet and Jak. but a solid first outing

User Rating: 8 | Sly Raccoon PS2

Jak and Ratchet stamped their mark as 2 of the finest platform characters on the PS2 but could Sly Cooper be sneaky enough to dethrone them.

Story

Well the story is Sly and his friends Bentley and Murphy are hoping to caputre treasure the Thieveus Racoonus but they have to go to 5 different areas. 5 henchmen who killed Slys family in the past.

Gameplay

You control Sly who has the ablities to jump, climb up poles, whack enemies with his cane and even use stealth. At certain points in the game he will get to use machinery like a turret, boat and even use a jetpack. His mates give him good advice such as weakspots and where to go.

The 5 areas are like an overworld. Here you go into portals to certan levelas and obtain keys. In the overworlds you will learn new moves like the hanging of a ledge, turn invisible and even grind down vines.

You go into a level to get keys 7 in each world to get to the boss and move on. You will also get a vault that will reveal some sort of surprise if you find the certain amount of clues which are in like bottles in each level.

The gameplay is okay but frustrating at times. Sometimes you will do the right jump and it won't land on a certain object sometimes and some levels are mostly trail and error because you can only really take one hit unless you find a horse shoe object. Coins give you a horseshoe meaning you can take one extra hit. So aminly you are going to have to accept you are gonna die a few times in a level.

Prsentation

The game has cartoony like cut scenes and in certain areas Sly will discuss with his mates how to get round a certain area. The cut scenes I don't think push the story enough just telling you where your next destination is.

Lastability

The main quest can be done in about less than 7 hours and maybe if you are going for 100% completion maybe a bit more but will you be tempted to clear it 100%.#

Overall Opinion

Sly Cooper and the Thieveus Racoonus isn't a bad game but its not a great game either. It's just when you think of how short it is the game lacks any real spark and doesn't really get going. You'd be better of sticking to Ratchet or Jak.
