Return to hell (or visit for the first time) and love every minute...*spoiler free*

User Rating: 9.5 | Silent Hill: Origins PSP
As a fan of the Silent Hill series, I came in with extremely high expectations. I was a bit worried when I saw early screen shots, but things took a turn for the best. Te game starts off by telling you it's best played in the dark with headphones. I couldn't agree more. The entire experience was most enjoyable from beginning to end. There were a very few key points that kept me from giving it a perfect 10, but they were so minimal, I couldn't deduct more than a half point. Here's my breakdown:

Graphics - As I mentioned, early build screen shots made me a bit worried. I didn't think Climax (the developer) would be able to pull it off on a handheld system, however they managed to pay homage to Team Silent's previous works and kept the look and feel of every aspect of the Silent Hill universe. Each creature moved and reacted so well...some even caught me off guard when I let them get too close and they went from slithering along the ground to pouncing. The only minor drawback in the graphics would have to be the darkness. It does give you the option to change the brightness level, and I think it would be wise if you aren't playing in the dark.

Controls - Typical Silent Hill/Survival Horror controls. The camera can make it a little difficult to move in the proper direction when it snaps to a different view, but veteran SH players should be able to adapt easily.

Story - Fantastic. It tells just enough to keep things moving along, yet leaves opening for interpretation. There are still plenty of questions to be answered, but this being a prequel, anyone can enjoy the twisted tale.

Difficulty - For anyone who's played Silent Hill or Resident Evil, this will be standard fare. It is a bit easier than some titles I've played in that there is an abundance of weaponry and ammo, and once you learn the creatures' patterns, most can be avoided without conflict or taken down with melee weapons, there by providing plenty of bullets to take on boss characters with. Some of the puzzles require some thought, and some are really vague as to how you go about solving them (just wait until you get to the laundo-mat and have to decipher laundry symbols), but most should solvable with the clues they provide.

Overall - Most people will try to say that the game is far too short (it can be completed in about 5 hours). I say it's right on par with the previous entries. Each environment is huge and the areas are well used. I just wish it could have been a tad bit more difficult and the camera could be a little more cooperative. Otherwise, Origins has my vote for game of the year.
