User Rating: 10 | Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne PS2
Shin Megami Tensei is a Japanese phrase that translates as "True Goddess Metempsychosis". The original Shin Megami Tensei was the third in the Megami Tensei (or "MegaTen") series, and first appeared on the Super Famicom in 1992. The game revolves around the nameless protagonist's attempts to defend Tokyo from an invasion of demons that threatens to turn the city into the new staging ground for the endless struggle between the forces of Law and Chaos. SMT Nocturne is a combination of diverging storylines, deep battle system, and awesome cell-shaded graphics, it's an excellent game with the potential to be appreciated by anyone.

The story is quite different from most of the games where you fight evil, save the world from destruction, blah blah. Here, you're already given a destroyed world after a few minutes of gameplay to begin with. The story begins within a dream, as a visiting spirit warns you of what is to come of the world. You are told that for a world to be born it must first come to an end. Don’t waste your time trying to prevent it, within the game’s first ten minutes disaster strikes. Friends, family, and the rest of civilization as you knew it no longer exists. The protagonist, a regular school going student, survives somehow and finds himself encircled by demons everywhere and realises that he has become one of them.

Now you must venture out and search for your "reason" which will ultimately lead you to create your own world based on your reason. Within the game, you'll encounter questions regarding the creation of the new world. This is an important aspect of the game since you have 6 different endings depending on your choices throughout the game.

GAMEPLAY :

There are many things that make he gameplay great such as the Pess Turn Battle System. The game is turn based but it has a unique 'press turn battle' system. You and your allies attack together in one turn and then the enemy side takes turns. Each action uses a 'press turn' and when your press turn icons are used up, it switches to the enemy turn. The number of icons may vary, depending on your actions. For instance, you dont lose a press turn icon if you land a critical hit or exploit an enemy's weakness. The same thing can work against you too. If you miss, you lose two icons and if your enemy benefits from your actions, you lose all. This is what make the battles very interesting and perhaps, difficult sometimes.

GRAPHICS :

The cell shaded graphics look wonderful and I have no complaints here. There are various environments and dungeons, each designed to suit itself. Overall, the graphics are simple awesome. Dark stylings suit the game’s atmosphere well, and are fantastically realized in pseudo-cel-shaded 3D. The game’s environments range from city ruins to bizarre ethereal realms, but they’re all attractive and moodily lit.

SOUND :

The soundtracks are mostly hard-rock, techno, a bit of jazz and of course, traditional japanese music. Though there is absolutely no voice acting, the music makes up for it. You will want to listen to some of the soundtracks again and again.

VALUE :

There are six different endings which obviously means there is a lot of replayability. the party is FULLY CUSTOMIZABLE. Except from the hero, the other members are the enemies you come across while adventuring. Yes, you can recruit members, evolve them, or even...."fuse" two demons together to create another, usually more powerful demon. Sounds great? Thats why I love this game. There are lots and lots of combos and skills the demons can acquire via fusion. Also, the same demon born from fusing two demons might have different skills than the same type of demon born from fusing yet another combination of demons. The list is endless....I think. Moreover, the battles are not just plain, bland and repetitive. A nice feature of the game, the enemies sometimes engage in a conversation with you during battle, asking for various things or to exchange information with something in return. You never know when this happens and thus, you gotta be alert always.

On top of all this, they even put Dante in the game, who plays his ever popular demon hunting role. Of course, as you know.....the main character is also a demon and you can expect a nice showdown when they meet in the game.

FINAL WORDS :

Any RPG fan should get this game no matter how hard to find. Its well worth the money.
