An interesting storyline with Demons and excellent gameplay!

User Rating: 9 | Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga PS2
The only Shin Megami games I played before this one was the Persona series so I was expecting something out of the ordinary and I wasn't dissapointed. This is a RPG with some flair and style.

Storyline: You play as 5 members of Embryon who live in the Junkyard along with 5 other gangs or groups. The main goal of the Junkyard is to defeat the other gangs in order to be rewarded with a trip to Nirvana. However, what they didn't expect was to be able to turn into Demons and be forced to eat their opponents. That's right... eat them. You must learn different Mantra's (magic) because all enemies are string or weak against a certain element.

Graphics: This is a basic PS2 game and although the graphics aren't to spectacular, they definately do not dissapoint and live up to the dark theme's of the game. They are very smooth however with hardly any glitches. The camera angle can be moved manually so there are no areas where its too difficult to see.

Weapons and Mantras: Although you can upgrade your Ammo for your guns in human form it's very rare to battle in this form anyway so you don't even need to spend any funds on Ammo. (You find them in the game anyway). The main battles are in Demon form and each player has a standard attack which strength is based on your level. You can learn mantra's to increase your elemental attacks which are the whole key to winning this game. Because you get an extra attack for each time you hit an enemy with their weak element, learning the correct ones will simplyfy this game. Bosses are difficult whether you have their weaknesses or not but you will get anialated without them. The learning of these Mantra's will take up most of your time along with increasing in levels.

Battles: As mentioned above, they only way to win this game is to learn the different elements and use them against each enemy. The battles are turn based but you can earn extra attacks by hitting an enemy with their weak element. The Boss battles are impossible without this strategy.

Overall: Definately one of the better all around RPG games I have played in a long time. The storyline kept me involved and definately had me guessing what could possibly happen next. There are plenty of surprises especially the ending and how the characters still never find out what's truly going on. ( I assume you find out in DDS2) The enemies are well created and the elemental strategy keeps you on your toes.
