Rogue Trooper is a useless game to have in collection because it is just a shooter and there is so much better out there

Rogue Trooper is the latest game from UK-based development company, Rebellion which have made games in the past such as Alien Versus Predator and Sniper Elite. But remember when Judge Dredd: Dredd Versus Death came out a while ago. It was alright and Rebellion has made another comic game, Rogue Trooper. The game plays well and has some good ideas. But the game is short and Rogue Trooper isn't much compared to other Sci-Fi shooters such as Doom 3 and Star Wars: Republic Commando.

In Rogue Trooper, you funnily enough play as Rogue. He looks kind of weird at first because of the blue skin and underneath his helmet is a Mohawk. But Rogue doesn't have much of a personality of his own. He does have his own fair share of dialogue but the three guys that you will be hearing the most are Gunnar, Helm and Bagman. On the first level of the game, these three guys were just like you but they had got killed but you have got their computer chips and these are used on your equipment. Gunnar is put on your rifle, Bagman put on your backpack and Helm is put on your helmet. It is a pretty silly idea but these guys have a lot more personality that Rogue does.

The gameplay in this game is pretty straightforward. You run around and shoot enemy soldiers just like you would in a normal game. But your computer chip buddies do give you some special tricks up your sleeve. Helm's specialty is to set up holographic images of yourself to trick your enemies. But I never used this special trick as the enemies are the most punishing anyway. Bagman sometimes gives you health and ammunition supplies if you are running low. But more importantly, he can be like a salesman of sorts. To describe what I mean, when you are on your missions, after you kill a soldier, you can walk up to them and press the A button which lets Rogue salvage his foe. This like the currency of the game when you do this and within Bagman you can purchase the basics like ammo and health. But you can also buy upgrades for your weapons. For instance, you can upgrade the amount of ammo that your shotgun attachment can hold or buy an attachment like the Sammy Launcher. Gunnar doesn’t have many abilities at all. The only thing that you can do with him is that you can set him up like a turret and he can take on foes all by himself. All of these abilities are what makes Rogue Trooper slightly different to other action games like Max Payne or The Outfit or something. There are times in the game where you can sneak up on your foes and perform stealth kills and other uninspired trite like that. But apart that, Rogue Trooper is a pretty repetitive game overall.

The graphics in Rogue Trooper are fairly good. The animations are nice and the particles effects are great. The environments are good for the most part but some of them aren’t very interesting to see or to play in. The textures aren’t the best either. The character models are very good looking too with Rogue and his fellow GIs looking the best. The framerate can be a problem sometimes when gunships and many soldiers are attacking and firing their weapons. This can make some of the action sequences not that fun. Overall, the graphics are competent but nothing to brag about.

The sound is quite good also and they do give of a good impression. The gunfire sounds very beefy and powerful like the way it should do. The voice acting can be annoying, definitely when Gunnar shouts out an unnecessary comment after you kill a guy. There is not a lot of music but what is in there is pretty good. So the sound is nice.
Another bad point about Rogue Trooper is that it isn’t a very long adventure. It only lasts about six hours and after you do finish the game, you don’t want to do it again. There is unlockable cheats and comic information but you will get most of that stuff on your first go. There is an interesting co-op multiplayer component which isn’t bad but isn’t going to last for a long time after you have finished the single-player campaign.

Rogue Trooper, is a pretty enjoyable game but it just doesn’t accomplish what it wanted to.
