Wha?... 2000 AD?... In spite of the obscure franchise, this one tops 90% of what Marvel and DC belch out these days.

OK. So the MC looks like a reject from a gay bar costume party and the cover art was done on the back of a 3-ring binder during study hall. I get it. But once you get past it's goofy exterior and no-name (at least here in the States) license you can chalk up another solid outing for the "under-the-radar" developer, Rebellion. While many of it's elements are standard shooter fare -- you can use your rifle as a sentry turret, hurl or launch various upgradeable things that go "BOOM!" and snipe to your heart's content -- all are found in one place and feel well implemented though out... Which is good because, although somewhat "short bus", the AI baddies are plentiful & ornery and devising new, creative ways to dispatch them never really gets old. I've never looked for Tolstoy or Hemmingway in my video game story lines, so the shallow plot line (something about your recently deceased buddies now being the wise-cracking memory chips in your backpack, rifle and helmet... and revenge is a big part of your motivation for shootin' everybody... or something like that) really didn't get in the way of blowin' things up real good. In the end, what we have is a very solid game with nifty weapons, beefy shoot outs and well-designed levels which move along rather quickly. Call it rooting for the little guy, but even though it doesn't have the name brand cachet of other "comic book" titles, this one is solid, well-paced, and does just enough to break the "7" barrier in my book. Recommended.
