User Rating: 8.8 | Rez PS2
Rez was one of the main reasons I bought a PS2. Having thoroughly enjoyed Panzer Dragoon Orta on XBOX, I was looking for a similar type of game and Rez definatly caught my attention. Rez was the first game I played on my PS2 and after a couple of hours I became a bit disappointed with it; "$250 dollars for this" I said. The gameplay was not as deep as Orta’s, the game was easy and the game didn’t have to many levels. But then the coolest thing happened. I played the Score Attack mode and the game’s difficulty ramped up. This mode was harder than the regular game. To score in the top five was a real challenge and the game became much more addictive. I also noticed that after playing the regular game a few times, the enemy patterns changed and the game itself became more difficult. In addition I read about, and then unlocked, some of the hidden levels. I think the breakthrough with Rez came when I realized that part of the gameplay was chaining combos. Yes you can shoot things one at a time, but if you string things together you get not only better sound effects but also higher points and different lighting effects. The game is also about displaying amazing graphics while playing to an amazing soundtrack. After a while I kept saying to myself “This really is a great game." I’ve now had Rez for about 3 months and it’s still my favorite PS2 game with Virtua Fighter III and Wipeout Fusion coming in close behind. I’ll finish up by saying this. Panzer Dragoon Orta is still the better game. If you have both systems get that first and see how you like it. If you do like it pick up Rez immediately before it disappears from store shelves. If you have a PS2 only it’s still an amazing game to pick up.
