Raise the banners.

Warning: 2K Games has released a patch that makes certain modes unplayable offline. My Career and NBA Today can only be played with an internet connection as of this writing. The other modes have been unaffected. - TM, 12/9/2013, 18:00 PST

Selfish athletes get a bad rap. Basketball is about more than winning and losing, more than raising banners. It's about All Star appearances and Hall of Fame busts. It's about pride. When I throw a beautiful pass to a wide-open big man under the basket and he misses a gimme, I don't care about the scoreboard. I'm worried about my stats, and how that buffoon just cost me a double double. And don't think for a second that I'm going to launch a full-court shot just before the buzzer sounds, not when I'm shooting 60 percent from the floor. NBA 2K14 puts you in the shoes of an NBA rookie, where you jockey for playing time and earn respect. My team's name may be on the front of my jersey, but it's the name on the back that's important to me.

NBA 2K14 has moved closer to reality than any basketball game so far. Players tweak their shots when defenders rush toward them, and tumble miserably to the floor when a driving point guard catches them off balance. Miss a critical foul shot, and you see the frustration in their eyes. Can they shake off their failure to hit the next shot? When Tyreke Evans is pounding the rock at the top of the key, his teammates stand around watching, knowing that even if they flash open, he's not going to give them the ball. The intelligence isn't so artificial anymore. Wing defenders fly toward the block to double-team Roy Hibbert, or stay glued to their man when Dwight Howard is bumbling around. The kinetic flow mirrors the real game so closely that minor flaws, such as when players don't dive for a loose ball, really stand out.

Come on, Lucas, I'm open under the basket!
Come on, Lucas, I'm open under the basket!

What's most striking about the visuals is how they draw you in. Stephen Curry isn't just a nondescript avatar. You can see his face and hear his words, and you want to prove your value against him. Thump your chest after picking his pocket; you've earned a bit of strutting. Make sure your feet are planted before you hoist a long three. If you're drifting backward, you jump awkwardly, and that off-balance hitch could be the difference between a swish and a clang. Defenders have busy hands, swatting away contested shots like a young Hakeem Olajuwon or poking at lazy dribbles like a venomous Chris Mullins. Again and again, defenders embarrass you, until you learn restraint. Use your off arm to shield the ball, practice up fakes and fadeaways, and most of all, be patient. Watch the flow before attacking, and know your limitations. This is a team game, even if you only care about filling up the box score.

And don't think for a second that I'm going to launch a full-court shot just before the buzzer sounds, not when I'm shooting 60 percent from the floor.

I've always felt a disconnect in previous iterations of My Career mode. Although I could use my own name and decide my play style, I never felt like I belonged. My player was just an avatar, as separate from me as a real NBA player. That's no longer true in NBA 2K14. Story sequences that played out behind the scenes made me care. Sure, I laughed when Derrick Favors would give me advice even though his voice wasn't recorded and his mouth didn't move, but I still appreciated being taken under his wing. After I shot poorly, he pushed me to the practice floor, and I couldn't leave until I knocked down 20 consecutive shots. After games, my coach called me into his office to praise me for an exemplary night on the court, or lecture me for sloppy play. I was part of the team, and chose how I conducted myself. When Richard Jefferson employed some Richie Incognito-style bullying tactics--telling me to carry his bags and wear a red nose just because I'm a rookie--I told the old man to shove it.

Don't worry, Frank Vogel, you're not on the hot seat. Yet.
Don't worry, Frank Vogel, you're not on the hot seat. Yet.

When the season began, I found my butt stapled to the pine. The Jazz aren't exactly loaded, but I still couldn't beat out Alec Burks or Brandon Rush for playing time. I watched players trade baskets from my courtside vantage, turning my head to see how my teammates were responding or peering into the crowd to watch the cheers and catcalls. Of course, I watched the action unfold as well, and took advantage when the coach finally gave me a chance. Coach Tyrone Corbin liked my willingness to act as a glue guy. I drained open threes and found cutting players. There were serious holes in my games, so I committed more rookie mistakes than I'd like to admit. I piled up more turnovers than points, unable to overcome pressing defenders, and couldn't defend a lick one-on-one. My feet were like cement, way too slow for the likes of James Harden. But I made slow and steady progress. When I became the team's sixth man, I couldn't contain my smile, and even led the team to a victory during a critical fourth quarter.

And then I tumbled.

When Richard Jefferson employed some Richie Incognito-style bullying tactics--telling me to carry his bags and wear a red nose just because I'm a rookie--I told the old man to shove it.

Coach Corbin began to trust me so much that he put me in charge of the second unit. As the main ball carrier, I had to run the offense, and that newfound responsibility was overwhelming. Defenders sensed my weaknesses, trapping me before I reached the three-point line. I was slow to react, panicked, and forced an ugly pass that resulted in a turnover. Later, I split a double-team and threw a pass to Enes Kanter. But I was out of control, and the ball sailed into the 10th row. Another turnover. On the defensive end, I wanted to make up for my mistakes, so I gambled for a steal. And I gave up an easy basket. That was the wake-up call I needed. When Austin Rivers is making me look foolish, I know that my game needs serious work. Coach Corbin chewed me out after the game, and cut my minutes, but I would earn my way back on the floor.

Poor Doris Burke being sent to interview a sarcastic shark.
Poor Doris Burke being sent to interview a sarcastic shark.

2K14 does a remarkable job of cutting the fat. You don't have to waste time scrimmaging or training in My Career mode; you prove your value during games. And that immediacy is empowering. The same is true in My GM mode. I tinkered with the stacked Pacers rosters before the season began and was proud of what I pulled off. I traded Danny Granger for Giannis Antetokounmpo and Ersan Ilyasova. I thought I was the next Jerry West. It turns out I was worse than Isiah Thomas. My beloved Pacers became the dregs of the East, but I continued to pitch trades to get back on top. With small success, I gained the wisdom that separates the general managers who are ousted in two years from those who flash maniacal victory grins at every draft. I learned how to scout and how to judge the emotional makeup of players. And don't think that irony was lost on me. I needed to know how mentally sound my players were, but couldn't become emotionally attached or else I'd be scared to pull the trigger on a trade.

Don't choke don't choke don't choke
Don't choke don't choke don't choke

Because NBA 2K14 is so close to reality, every step away from what we know about the real NBA feels off. Earning points to improve my scouting talent as a general manager is less rewarding than organically becoming more proficient. Why do I have to earn the ability to tweak lineups? I'm the general manager, darn it, and I can fire the coach if he questions me. The same contrivances exist when improving your player in My Career. My three-point shooting doesn't improve when I spend time in the gym or drain a clutch corner jumper. No, I have to spend points in that stat after the game. Yes, raising my character from benchwarmer to starter is empowering, but just imagine if I could improve based entirely on how I played. There's still that lingering disconnect, that one element that kept me from being fully invested. Even with this unrealistic approach, there's so much that lured me deeper in that I couldn't dwell long on this one oddity.

The on-court action in NBA 2K14 isn't markedly different from the way the current generation versions play, which means its excellent, and by far the best we've ever seen in virtual basketball. What's so remarkable is how the upgraded visuals enhance the overall experience. Smooth animations and lifelike faces aren't just eye candy; they affect you on an emotional level. By chipping away at that barrier between digital players and real life, you feel even closer to what's transpiring, which makes it difficult to pull yourself away. You want to hold the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy in one hand and an MVP trophy in the other. For the first time in my life, I finally sympathized with the likes of Carmelo Anthony. I know what it's like when your teammates are struggling and you just want to chuck the ball every time down the floor. But I'm better than that. I'm going to win a ring.

The Good

  • Incredible visuals that add to your emotional investment
  • My Career mode makes you care about your player
  • Artificial intelligence displays real tactics
  • My Career centers on games rather than practices, keeping you engaged

The Bad

  • Mute players in My Career are laughable

I wonder how much gamespot got paid to create such a lie of a review. It's almost like the reviewer didn't play NBA 2K14 at all and just imagined what it would be like instead. At least 20 of the things in this review don't and even can't happen in the game mechanics. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. 1/10 for NBA 2k14, and 1/10 for this review and its pack of lies.

HOW COME GAMESPOT DOES NOT RE-RATE THIS GAME? Make a NEW Review about it.... if you guys don't PEOPLE WON'T be aware of all the WRONG things with NBA2k14. And 2k won't make improvements.

I think there should be more options on the blacktop mode. There maybe could be more courts to choose from to play 1 on 1, 2 on 2, 3 on 3 etc I. Maybe have a option to play at nigh time at a famous court like the Rucker Park or something like that. It doesn't have to be a legendary court, just more courts to play at and to choose from. You should also be able to play Inside on the blacktop mode like at a practice court or something. It gets boring playing at the same court all the time. I kno its not a street-ball game but that doesn't mean it can't have a better variety of options for that mode because it's fun to team up the all time greats and have them on 1 court to play the game of basketball.

And also there are some old school players who should be apart of NBA 2K. I think Tracy McGrady should be on there. Also KAREEM ABDUL JABAR should never be left out of any game that has All Time Greats. And those Generic shoes look bad on players like Dominique Wilkins lol. Also, LARRY BIRD"S HAIR IS NOT THAT GREY SMH. Put the 2000's Lakers when the won their first champion. Or the the Kobe Bryant in the mid 2000's when he hit 81 Points. And on the Next-Gen Version I cant change the Shoes like you could on NBA 2k13 by going to edit player and change their Accessories so I can get my players out of those generics smh. I was upset that there was no KAREEM.

Overall its good but there are some things that could be upgrade like options tho choose from as far the the setting and locations on the blacktop mode for the pick up games and a few legends and legendary teams that could be on there like when 2k11 came out and you had a challenge for each legend that was awesome i Just don't see how things that w=made the game really fun could be take away. Maybe a Younger Oscar Robertson. The ROOKIE version of ALLEN Iverson should definitely be there, Everybody remembers the moment when he crossed over Michael Jordan. And get those guys who are on the end of the roster who never played in the NBA. SMH. Just some players they made up and threw them on a legendary squad. That disappointing to a true fan. But these are just a few suggestions from a gamer who's been playing NBA 2k every since the Dreamcast was out lol. I just would like it to get better but at the same time don't take away the things that makes players really want to have fun with NBA 2k.

The 2001 Allen Iverson looks like he's 40 years old in the face. SMH. Also i think you should be able go play to as many points as you want, not just to 21 on the streetball mode.

Are you seeing this? Any chance you can revisit this? 2K really did screw this up. Please, for the love of gaming, check this out.

I actually got MS to give me a refund, since I bought it on the Xbox One Store online. This game IS BROKEN. Sad too, because once you're playing, it's a great game of B-Ball in my opinion. But everything else is wrecked and when you come back to your save file, chances are (for me it was 100% chance) the file is corrupt.

The game is really frustrating, and this frustration makes me feel less satisfied with the on-court action as a result. I'd rate the game a 5 out of 10. MyCareer still suffers from the same horrendous teammate AI issues that it has since its inception (even on Hall of Fame difficulty). Your teammates still miss what feels like 70% of the open shots they take, while more often than not passing away those open shots in the first place. They discredit me for calling for the ball when there's a mismatch, and the game doesn't even reward mismatches in the first place despite announcers recognizing them and commenting on them (so the game knows it takes place on some level). I literally cannot think of one instance in which my 6'10" PF, whose Player Efficiency Rating was 40 (highest ever in real life was 31) was able to execute a post move (which he'd done constantly over much taller defenders) against anyone below 6'7". Not once. Even in normal games, the players you don't control do a horrendous job on defending the perimeter, leading to 40 point games from 3 pt specialists constantly unless you always shift to the active defender (sometimes you want to control the big man because AI rebounding for your team is similarly horrendous, thus you give up 3-5 offensive rebounds in a single play every now and then).

MyGM would be the mode I play most, as it is the real reason I bought the game in the first place, but the gouging which takes place in the form of real money transactions for VC has rendered this mode unplayable unless you dedicate yourself to playing an entire 82 game season. I don't find the on-court games satisfying without playing at least 10 minute quarters. Playing full games is the only way to get VC. VC is required to purchase any GM abilities short of basic trade and drafting functions. The amount of time I would need to buy basic upgrades is insane. You get nothing for simulating games, the reason I assume is because they think people would continuously simulate on MyGM modes to farm currency, thus not spending real money for fake money or putting in the hours necessary to "earn" them. How about making something different for MyGM? Far too much money is required in the form of VC to unlock the most basic of managerial abilities, such as changing the player lineup or firing employees. It is a disgusting practice, and one that doesn't even begin to show people an ounce of respect for the money they pay to play the game in the first place. It's actually worse than Pay-To-Win. It's Pay-To-Be-Able-To-Play. The game has a system of money within it that isn't related to VC, why is that not used to pay for stadium upgrades or anything else in this mode? Contextually it makes beyond no sense how the game is set up, unless you take a step back and realize that 2k wants to milk this franchise's integrity until it shrivels up and dies like Madden did.

Other problems include a crippling contract negotiation bug and a lack of information in many scenarios, such as when your coach wants you to draft a certain player, and says his name, yet you have no ability to even see the player's position or your report on him. So I'd have to memorize the names of fake players to comment on my coach's demands at all. If I say I'll draft him but he gets taken before I can pick, I get penalized for some reason. Or when he asks you for a film room and you can't respond by saying you don't have the ability to buy one because you haven't unlocked the "GM skill" yet. So I get penalized for not respecting his wishes, even though the game itself is the only hindrance and not my refusal to act.

Dear NBA 2k14, WHY THE HELL DO WE NEED SERVERS AND CONSTANT CONNECTION just to play MYGM or season? WHY ? WHY? What do you suggest WE PLAYERS do IF 1. YOUR SERVERS ARE DOWN 2. OUR INTERNET PROVIDER CUTS the connection due to weather or something else. PLEASE ANSWER 2k, WHY DID YOU MAKE EVERYTHING so DEPENDENT ON YOUR SERVERS? I honestly miss the OLD SIMPLE NBA2k's. You wanna go online, fine you go and connect, you dont fine you didnt have to.

Another Update:

After endlessly trying to get this game to work, it just wouldn't. My save games would ALWAYS be corrupted. I think their server-side save system or whatever it's doing was just a terrible idea. It plain doesn't work. Everything else on my XB1 works just fine. Again, I love the game it simulates once your playing, everything else is just garbage.

Since I bought it online via the Xbox Store on my XB1, I was actually able to convince MS to give me a refund. Took a day and a half chatting with CS and exchanging emails, but being polite, but firm about how broken this game was worked for me. So if you bought it straight from the Xbox store, try and get your money back. I did.

This game is fully tied into on-line elements and 2k servers are buggy and often not available. I had a GM reach level 35 only to have a 2k "error" and he was reset to 0. I opened a case on their support sight and its been sitting there for weeks with no update. Trust me, you don't want to be involved with this mickey mouse organization.

@Cpt_Cosmonaut Yeah. I was polite with the CS rep I chatted with and the emails I exchanged with the other rep wihen they escalated it to the "Advocacy Team". I was polite but firm about how broken this game was.

At first they told me no. I then told them that I understood their stance and that if that's the way it was, I would no longer purchase anything from the Xbox Store. I told them that at least with Gamestop or another retailer, I could trade the game in and get some kind of value back for what was wasted money, but with the Xbox Store direct purchase, I felt completely swindled, as the game is just completely broken and my money lost and no trade in option.

Again, just be polite and spell out your case as acurately, yet succinctly as you can, but let them know you won't do business with them, again politely. I was successful, the money hit my account today in fact. Every last cent of the purchase was refunded.

@LancerVI Did you get it back? I mean it's been 2 weeks now, I spoke with 2 rep's and they are just saying it'll take some time to return all my VC they deleted. So basically I purchased the game for 60 bucks when it came out, used VC, haven't been able to play it successfully, and soon there will be a price drop on the game (as there always is with games) and boom consumer gets screwed. Its just not fair. They did a overkill with this game. I mean to simply play MYGM I need to be hooked to servers. I have a 20mb connection but thats still stupid because WHAT WILL WE DO IF lets say our internet goes out for some reason....WELL good luck playing your NBA2k14 and advancing in it cuz it ain't gonna happen.

An update:

Every time I start a career, get drafted and play a game or two; then come back later, I get this "myplayer data corrupted. Would you like to delete the file" which is the only option and I lose all my progress and VC. I have to start all over, watch all the crappy cut scenes that you can't skip (annoying BTW 2K, I rather watch a loading screen. Give us a choice to skip, especially if it's our 5th time watching it.)

The game NBA 2k14 simulates is great, no question. The rest? absolutely atrocious. Crappy character editor, archaic and monstrously un-intuitive menu system. Add on top of that crappy servers and file management system that seems to corrupt data and you have a mess. I've yet to have a save game file not be corrupt. (Don't blame my XB1, every other game and save is working fine.) Fix this mess 2k or it's the last dime you'll see from me. Believe it!

I posted this to the NBA 2k site. I don't think it was overly offensive. I think it was fair and on point. No matter, it was deleted in seconds.

The game is good, meaning the basketball game it simulates. The menu system is absolute garbage. The character editor is garbage. It is not a well laid out game at all. You have to dig to find the things you want.

I have owned all NBA 2k games since 2k3. This 2k14 is the worst.

1. AUTOSAVE can not be turned off (I contacted 2k, and sadly its unchangeble)

2. VC monetary system for everything in the game is horrendous (YOU WILL SEE YOUR MONEY dissapear)

3. Frustrating MENU systems, you need to google things you are looking for to find them in the game.

@tomjay31 @Cpt_Cosmonaut Dude, so they DELETED my PROFILE! I had a Profile in MyGM level 55/70 and now whenever I go to play the game it asks me to create a new PROFILE. So all the VC money I spent to get to level 55 are GONE! I'm back to 0/70. But yea TWITTER is blowing up about this at 2k support (check it out if u have time). THEY RIPPED US OFF SO BAD.

Ok, I like the game so far, but this review fails to point out a big missing option......practice mode. If you're brand new to the world of NBA 2K like me then good luck because there is no practice mode on the next gen version of this game that I downloaded through Xbox Live for my Xbox One. Still, I love the level or realism, but I guess I have to grow up a lot faster since I have no direct practice mode to work with.

Update, the practice mode is embedded within the NBA Today option. Still puzzling why this isn't directly accessible from the main menu.

So have they fixed the unrealistic scoring problem that has plagued every basketball game ever? You know, the one that leaves you with final scores Lakers 195 - San Antonio 225....at half time.

Having not played an NBA game in years, I thought I'd check in on this review to see the current state of affairs in basketball gaming. I don't know exactly what I expected, but better than this. The character's faces and hair look horrible.

It's clear that soccer games have come a lot further than basketball games. But considering how many millions more people play the soccer games, I guess it all adds up.

@Stabba_The_Kutt I can't stand watching soccer/football, but love playing FIFA. And you are absolutely out of your mind, dogging on 2K's animations (Which are far better than FIFA's).

@slimskelter @ @danyjr uhhh newsflash guys, they're both utter garbage. And I don't play either. And frankly, people who pay full price year after year for tiny, subtle improvements are morons.

@Stabba_The_Kutt @slimskelter Morons? More like people who have their lives together and shelling out 60 is nothing for the hours of entertainment you're going to get

@Stabba_The_Kutt What the hell are you talking about? FIFA's gameplay is hideous compared to the realism of NBA 2K14.

@lakers4life6969 Try youtube dude. You'll probably have better luck asking people who have been playing it than people reading the review. Good luck.
