Good, but not great.

I just want to say straight off the bat that I did enjoy this game. However, I felt cheated when i got to the final level, it finished too early which is a bit poopy really. This game seems to have suffered something which has effected many games in this generation: it's too short. I remember some of the older r-type games being really long and really hard. Don't get me wrong this game is HARD. But for an old gamer (like me) it isn't that difficult. I won't totally put this game down, it has good points: It looks amazing the graphics are phenomenal! The enemies are colourful and detailed. The backgrounds are beautifully rendered, the game can suffer from slow down when there is lots of gun fire and enemies about. The gameplay mechanics are simply wonderful it just goes to show that r-types's style of play doesn't go out of date, it's easy to get hold of the controls and the massive amount of ships to fly is a joy to unlock (be it a difficult task) and brings replay value to the game. The sound is lovely, it paces along and creates mood. However sitting here as I write this i can't remember a single song from the game at all. Good music but not something you'll hmmm to in the street. A few things that bothered me were: The price: this game should have sold for cheaper it didn't last long and no amount of replay value can make up for a 5 level game. This is debateable as one of the levels can look different depending on what ship you use. Overall a good game, but way too short, I would have been happy with half the ships and twice the length (four times even!). For the last title in a seris it comes out a little short.
