A lot of the differences have to do with the developers. Plus you can't go by the screenshots they give you. They aren't really even doing that. They are going by gameplay they watch on screen and try to give you the best examples through screenshots.

They are actually very wrong about the widescreen support. The game was made on widescreen computers. So on widescreens what you see is how they intended the game to look. 4:3 users got the trash because they decided to keep the ratio instead of the standard technique of letterboxing they they sqeezed the image down the same way but let you see above and below where the black boxes normally would be. So the 4:3 users actually just have more of a vertical view instead of letterboxing.
