Of course it's hype. That's what developers do - hype their games. You think they're going to say "you know, we think others have done multiplayer better"?
I'm not defending anything here. I'm pointing out the utter irrationality of the hatred for EA - a company which is harmless, makes harmless products, and can be ignored. Some of you folks act like EA donkey punched your mother or pissed in your milk or something.
Yes, it would be great if dozens of studios were closed and tens of thousands of people lost their jobs because of some irrational hatred of a company that makes entertainment products that you're free to ignore if you don't like.
And there are tons of "artful" games out there, always have been (art, mind you, being solely in the eye of the beholder). Those games don't get quite the attention that 'Call of Duty' does. Then again, those "arthouse" films don't get quite the attention ether. What does get attention? The latest Hollywood blockbuster where Tom Cruise blows up and bunch of shit and pretends to be straight, or where Will Smith blows up a bunch of shit and pretends to act.
