Alright, so, I have found out exactly what the problem is and it is probably good that I did it now.

I was still monitoring what was happening during those frame drops and I noticed that the CPU clock get's down to 1,36 gHz and stays there for the frame drop. So, I searched around a bit and soon found out my CPU is overheating.

The max temp for the FX-8350 is 62 degrees, mine is running 58 idle and at those frame drops it reaches 68 degrees, then it automatically downclocks itself as safety.

If anybody is having this problem as well, check your temps.

OK, so I have defragmented and optimized my drive and that seems to have helped some. Maybe it just feels like it but it seems like the issue happens much less often and then only lasts for about 10 seconds.

Thanks everybody for the help, new SSD coming soon.

I remember playing Far Cry 4 when I came out and the vehicles in first person.

I know I'd like abandoned construction vehicles (bulldozers, excavators etc.) that you could smash through stuff.

@thewildcat: It sounds like your hard drive is no longer working as good as it used to and is stuggling when accessing the page file. Try defragmenting your hard drive to see if it helps. Otherwise, I recommend replacing it. SSD upgrade is always good. You can buy a 250GB SSD for cheap which will be good for your OS and programs. If you want to spend more, then you can buy an SSD for games as well, but mechanical drives are the cheapest. Upgrading to more RAM would be good, but you would have to buy DDR3 and wouldn't be able to transfer it over to a future build. That old build is not worth putting new parts that can not be used in a future build. Since the issue started recently, I believe it is tied to your hard drive.

I will probably buy the SSD soon, I am looking at the 480GB Kingston since I need some space for my videos and stuff. For now I will try to look up how to defragment the drive. Also when I get the SSD I need to figure out how to move my Windows to it.

I think I will just get the RAM, since I still don't have a steady source of income and I need the money I get for other stuff (studies etc.), so I am stuck with this build for at least two more years . It still goes through most of the stuff I need it for with ease and a new build would cost a lot.

Another thing I noticed when the PC was just idling with the task manager open- every now and then a process called ''Service host:Superfetch'' comes up and uses 100% of the disk, 10% CPU and 30% of RAM. I googled it and it turns out it's a thing that is supposed to lower RAM and disk usage, tho seems like it's doing the exact opposite.

@thewildcat: Have you tried monitoring your PSU usage? might be either that or some MOBO driver / BIOS update that is missing.

I have not. I am not sure how to do so but I will check, thanks.

Hello,

I've recently got this problem and I decided to ask here, since you guys helped me build my first PC and helped me out with other problems.

So, I've had this PC like this for 2 years now, I am running and AMD FX-8370 Wraith, MSI GTX 1050TI 4GB, 8GB HyperX Fury RAM, WTD 1TB HDD.

It has been more than good, I was running a steady overclock on my 1050TI (temps all good) and had bumped the FX-8370 from 4,0 gHz to 4,45 gHz. The PC would run all games in very good fps range, but recently a problem appeared.

In some games- DiRT 4, BeamNG.drive, GTA V, CS:GO, Rust- I started having lag spikes. Let's say DiRT 4, I am averaging about 80-90fps on Ultra graphics but at one point, the fps drops to around 20-30fps and stays like that for about a minute, then it goes back to normal. In GTA V I am getting around 90-100fps on very high settings (all the games are optimized using GeForce), then the fps drops to around 15, that really bothers me, because in an intense situation (combat, race etc.) it can really screw you over.

After I saw this stuff happening, the first thing I did was taking the overclock off. That didn't really change much, except the general fps was lower but the lag spikes were still there.

Then I started monitoring the performance. An interesting thing I saw was that when the frame drop happens, the usage of both CPU and GPU goes down. I continued investigating and saw that while my RAM usage is around 80% of the 8GB, the Page File usage is really up there, it's around 15000MB in the pagefiles when playing GTA V.

My first guess is that I need an SSD and maybe two more RAM sticks to get 16GB. The only thing that's interesting is that it appeared recently and I didn't have such problems before. Some time before the problem appeared, I think there was a GeForce driver update tho.

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

I recently bought a Corsair Harpoon.

It has been awesome- good interface, nice and comfortable shape. It has an RGB Corsair logo on the back but if it seems annoying to you, you can turn it off anytime.
