And no, ME3's ending isn't deus ex machina. Neither teh Crucible or the Catalyst is deus ex machina, and Lair of the Shadow Broker set up the Crucible.

Ichiban is clearly the protagonist, Kiryu is the deuteragonist. Kiryu is only the lead in 3 chapters.
