Overtly Overrated

Not necessarily bad, but I think they get far more praise than they deserve. Not including the more recent COD games, because that's too obvious.

Batman: Arkham City

I mean, it's pretty good, and it still looks really nice, and controls smoothly and all that. The story isn't nearly as good, the villains are hit and miss as far as writing and performance, and I think the open city kind of annihilates the tension from Arkham Asylum when it's trying to be so similar in story structure and gameplay. Still fun and well made, but poor decisions an some poor performances hurt what it could have been in my opinion.

BioShock Infinite

This is half a brilliant game. The first half I'm entranced by the beautiful set pieces, outside and inside, the characters and writing, the atmosphere, the symbolism behind just about everything, the lore, even the gameplay, which was the weakest part, but still fun,. Then a portal opened up. It was itneresting going through time at first, but once oen of the cooler characters you met's, well, character, immediately plipped, I was pissed, but still pressed on. It got stupid and convoluted, boring, with drab set pieces and shooting gallery missions, concluding in a cool looking but tediously huge gunfight and that stupid, STUPID ending, that even if it wasn't so STUPID and not smart, would invalidate everything you'd done. Its good outweighs the bad, but the bad is really bad, though I'm still glad I experienced it.

7

Borderlands

Both of these games are very overrated in my opinion, but at least 2 isn't terrible, and it wouldn't have sold so much if this hadn't been so popular. Garbage controls, ugly designs, terrible attempts at comedy, and a bland world with repetitive missions and enemies. I'll never get it. my disdain would have it at a two, but it's at least not a broken mess, or I'd have rated it much lower than a 4.

4

Dragon Warrior I & II

It may seem unfair, as these games clearly don't hold up mechanically. But the combat is horribly shallow, even for its time, as is the story. The music is decent and the grinding is terrible. It's better for the GBC re-release, but it's still worth mentioning. It has the rating I gave it for historical significance. Again, it may seem unfair, but so many people act like it still plays like a classic, and it really doesn't. III isn't that great either, but it's better at least. I'd start with IV.

5

Fallout 3

It only has a 4 cuz I like some of the soundtrack and, the standard Bethesda glitches aside, it's well-constructed. Unfortunately, it's aesthetically boring, the gameplay is stiff, and the world is far too full of nothing and dull to ever trudge through. After leaving the vault, I've never been able to get through more than an hour of this game, all of which were me painfully trying desperately to enjoy it. Even New Vegas felt more lively, controlled a million times better, and actually had a world that had personality but still fit the idea of the post-apocalypse, and that was mane in literally 1/4 of the time by a much smaller staff. It's pretty damn pathetic.

4

Final Fantasy VII

Figures Gamespot gives it an 8, Most people, and journalists have it as an all-time great when it's a middle-of-the-road FF game. Still really good, just, not THAT perfect.

8

GoldenEye 007

This game holds A LOT of nostalgia for me. Among my earliest gaming memories are playing the multiplayer with my aunt and uncle and trading the controller trying to get through the later levels. But we have to be real, this is a primitive and frankly, kind of bad FPS. I give it all the praise possible for what it did for console FPS games and how much time and effort was put into making it, but it's one of the worse aging games ever made.

5

Grand Theft Auto III

Though not bad, this game controls poorly now, looks terrible, though it's understandable, and is kind of empty considering its selling point. The story is decent but nothing amazing, but the gameplay, 95% o it, isn't fun compared to its sequels. I loved atching it as a kid, but even when I played it then, it never grabbed me. I'd actually give it a 6.5, for the record. I think Vice City is overrated too, but better, and San Andreas is still very enjoyable, but not near IV or V,

7

Halo 3: ODST

This was the first, but not last, lackluster game in the series (minus 5 cuz I haven't played it). It's stiff, the plot is boring, the levels are dull and too dark, and I just could never care about anything going on.

5

Halo: Combat Evolved

Even when this came out, I wasn't all that enthralled by it. I liked it, but didn't love it. It's a solid game with a surprisingly deep story. However, the missions and levels are hit and miss, the movement and shooting feel stiff compared to others in the series, and it's just never been all that fun. It's good, but just good. Also, can we stop saying it revolutionized console shooters for the next generation? it was a PC game too. That's like saying L4D revolutionized console shooters for that generation.

9

Kingdom Hearts

It's all about the combat. It's shallow, tedious, and you fight way too many enemies at once. it takes forever, it makes the game drag, and it makes it borderline unplayable for me.

5

Left 4 Dead 2

This isn't bad like Borderlands, it's just bland and unoriginal. It's basically an acrade-ey version of COD: Zombies with floatey controls, bleak and uninspired environments and three enemy types recycled over and over again. There's some witty dialog thrown in, but what else does it have?

5

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance

I liked it as a kid, but even compared to its PS2/Xbox-era follow-ups, this game has nothing going for it. The combat is wonky and awkward, the combo system is much more shallow than promised, and the only resemblance of MK left is the blood, even the characters look stupid. I'm ok with different, but they're just dumb. At least the vague story has a cool premise and the opening AMV is awesome.

5

Saints Row IV

The comedy is forced, the gameplay is boring, the city is bland, and your character is too OP to ever be enjoyable using. On top of that, it's aesthetically dull, the enemies are forgettable, and the missions are a drag. Its only saving graces are a few good chuckles, some of the weapons, in terms of concept, not that any are stronger than you are, and that the controls are still good.

5

Street Fighter IV

It's unresponsive and ugly. Why is it so beloved? Ultra being no matter solidified me not getting SFV.

5

Super Mario 64

See above, but worse controls, a couple cool levels, at least conceptually, and more repetitive music. One of the worst Mario games, among the most influential, but that doesn't mean good.

4

Team Fortress 2

I can at least see the appeal of this one. A lot of personality and variety. The floatey controls and spotty hit detection are things I can't understand loving in a competitive game.

5

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

It's bland, boring, uninspired, uninteresting, annoying to control, and just dull in every way imaginable. I can't possibly understand how anyone can get "absorbed" into such a personality-deprived world with so little variety to it.

5

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

It controls terribly, them usic is good but far from the best in the series, the puzzles are either annoyingly simple or just tedious, and it gets by with "trendsetter" status. I'm not a big Zelda fan, aside from a couple stand-outs, but this is among the worse to me.

4

Tomb Raider

Lara is a stereotype that makes the original Lara cringe, she immediately adapts to killing and still wants our sympathy, the gameplay is awkward, the story is dumb and unoriginal, and the script is terrible. This is pretty damn bad, why the hell do you all love it?
