I've always thought that the only good game that came from Crytek was Far Cry, and that because it was a new take on the FPS genre (open spaces? OMG). Crysis began the trend of "Tech Demo" games. Sure, it's gorgeous, and it's so scalable that you can make it look photo realistic with some mods and current PC Power. But the game itself was uninteresting and full of holes, without mentioning unoriginal and concept-wise sterile (except for snow jungle, which is interesting). After that, it simply got REAL bad. At least Crysis was mediocre.

I do agree consoles are sucking the life out of games in general. While there are a lot of very original and artistic games out there for consoles (Journey rings a lot of bells, along with Ico), the limitations both in interface (controller) and horsepower means that games have to be toned down. Long gone are the times of console command tweaking, or level editing to create a monster horde. That is what made Crysis stand out from its heirs: it was PC only, and as such, came with an editing suite that wasn't limited by a stupid login, or by consolized assets. That's also a reason why I love STALKER and EVE Online so much. No compromises, just fun... but you have to earn that fun. The only console example is the Souls series, and that's why it's so widely acclaimed: it gave the console players a taste of what real fun is.
