Is it a 1000, 2000, or 3000? I still have my old 1000 and I've never had any problems with it. And are you sure it's not your game instead of the UMD drive?
I can never seem to explain to people how the story and characters change with each game.... Anytime I try, they're just like, "Well of course the story is different! Why would you pay for the same game?" But if you want to get in to FF start with VII, definitely the best.

Also be prepared to pay a chunk of change for 7. It goes for $70+ on some sites but if you find it somewhere cheap, props to you. Seriously!? I found mine like three years ago sitting by itself on some shelf in wal-mart for like 10$!
