Yeah ROF is a great game and deserves more love. ROF does for JRPGS what Valkyria Chronicles did for SRPGs: ROF adds great action into turn based play.
I love how ROF forces you to think a couple of moves ahead while you are taking your turn. Battle is all about positioning your characters strategically and using the right sequence of attacks/weapons.
It most reminds of a Shin Megami Tensei game. It has a similar minimalist story telling method: a few key cut scenes that slowly reveal the big picture interspersed with a bunch of small vignettes showing the three main characters living their daily lives. It has a similar overworld: when you on the overworld map you are a peg and you get into random battles as you move from town/dungeon area to town/dungeon area. In towns, it has a similar feel where you run around talking to NPCs to find out bits of info about what is going on in the big picture as well as to get missions.
But of course, at the same time ROF is totally unqiue due to the hex system (allows you to add special affects to random overworld battles and dungeon battles), the character/weapon customization (I was really impressed with the fact that when you change your characters clothing/hair it is changed everywhere in game – in cut scenes, while walking around town, while in battle), and the battle system (its awesome).
The only downsides I see in this game are the fact that the instructions really suck (which means you have to spend a lot of time teaching yourself the game thru trial and error) and the graphics aren't really up to par for a PS3 game. But the good points totally outweigh those small downsides so there is no reason not to go out and buy this game today.
Also, since I mentioned Valkyria Chronicles above I should add that the fighting in ROF is similar in concept, but the two games feel totally different. In VC when you are on a battle map it is like you are in a real location – you're in a forest with trees and paths, etc, or you're in a city with roads and buildings that connect up like they would in real life and you are positioning your troops more like you might in a real battle. In ROF, you fight in battle rooms like you find in most JRPGs: a small open area where your 3 characters appear on one side of the room and your enemies appear on the other side. ROF does sometimes add some bunkers and walls into the battle rooms (and some battle rooms are bigger than others) but its not like a real battle map like you find in VC. Don't get me wrong, ROF's still fun, but if you are looking for an SRPG like VC, ROF isn't really it.
( FYI for those of you waiting for a price drop to try ROF, there is an unadvertised sale at Kmart, ROF is $37.99 until May 10th . )
